No-interest flood loans available

MainSource Bank is offering interest-free loans to property owners affected by the Feb. 28 flood in Jay County.
The Disaster Relief Loan Program will allow flood victims to take an interest-free loan with no payments due for up to 120 days.
Energy Star award
Verallia North America, as part of parent company Saint-Gobain, will receive the 2011 Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The award, which Saint-Gobain has now received for three consecutive years, recognizes the company’s efforts to conserve energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Saint-Gobain locations in the U.S. were able to reduce energy usage by 3.8 percent and reduce carbon dioxide production by more than 131,000 tons.

Portland Fire Chief Matt Aker was selected as a representative to the National Volunteer Fire Service Summit hosted by the International Association of Fire Chief’s Volunteer and Combination Officers Section.
Aker attended the summit in Washington D.C. from March 17 to 19, during which attendees discussed issues affecting volunteer fire departments in the present and future.
Topics that were addressed included the impact of the economy, recruitment and retention, firefighter health and safety, local government relations and national legislative issue.
Assistance
The Indiana Department of Workforce Development announced this week that some employees of Key Plastics, LLC, Hartford City, will be eligible to receive federal assistance from the Trade Adjustment Assistance program.
The decision was made March 16 and applies to workers who were out of work on or after Feb. 14, 2010. The TAA program allows to re-employment services, job search and relocation allowances and training. Also, weekly payments may be received after workers have exhausted unemployment benefits.
Workers age 50 and up from Key Plastics may also be eligible for Re-employment Trade Adjustment Assistance, since they possess skills that are not easily transferable to other jobs during a time of adverse market conditions. They may also be eligible to receive wage subsidies of 50 percent between their new and old salary, up to $12,000.

Jennifer Miller, the daughter of rural Portland residents, was selected as one of 24 people selected nationally to join the Medtronic Suscipio Society for 2010.
Nominations are made by peers in Medtronic then reviewed and chosen by the company’s upper management. The select-membership society selection comes with a monetary award and the inductee’s name is inscribed on a bronze plaque at the company headquarters in Minneapolis, Minn.
Miller has been with Medtronic as a clinical specialist in Indianapolis since April 2003. She passed the Benchmark for Excellence in Hearth Rhythm Certification in October 2008 and was promoted to principal clinical specialist in June 2010.
She is the daughter or Patrick and Barbara Miller, rural Portland, and resides in Indianapolis with her husband and two daughters.

Food drive
Curves of Portland will participate in the 13th Annual Curves Food Drive during April.
Curves will collect non-perishable food or cash donations to benefit the local food bank. Current members who make a $30 donation of food or cash will receive a Curves reusable grocery bag and new members making a $30 donation between April 4 and 17 will have their membership fee waived.

Tyson donation
Tyson Foods Inc. has pledged to make donations to the Japan Earthquake/Pacific Tsunami Fund of the American Red Cross.
The company will match employee donations dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000 for the Red Cross. Tyson will be accepting donations from employees through the end of April then will be matched and sent to the Red Cross.
Tyson employs around 115,000 people in about 400 facilities.
Marsh collection
Marsh Supermarkets announced it will collect money at Marsh, MainStreet Market and O’Malia’s Food Market locations to donate to the Red Cross to aid those affected by the earthquake and tsunami that took place near Japan.
Customers may make a donation of $1, $3 or $5 at the register. The money will then be collected and sent to the Red Cross.
Elected
Portland Mayor Bruce Hosier was re-elected to the position of chairman of the Energize-ECI Regional Planning District for 2011.
Hosier will continue to chair the development board comprised of members from Blackford, Delaware, Grant and Jay counties.
Jay County members on the regional planning district board include Hosier, Jay County Commissioner Milo Miller Jr., Jay County Council president Mike Leonhard, Dunkirk mayor Ron Hunt, Bryant Town Board president Jason Meinerding, Pennville town marshal Ralph Frazee and Redkey town board member Doug Stanley.
The district has helped to bring more than $2.7 million in economic development grants to the four-county region.
Walgreen acquires
Walgreen Co. announced Thursday that it will purchase online retailer Drugstore.com for $429 million.
The acquisition should give Walgreen access to Drugstore.com’s 3 million online customers. Walgreen announced it would pay $3.80 per share of stock to Drugstore.com shareholders, more than twice the Wednesday closing price of $1.79 per share.
The move will increase Walgreen’s online presence by purchasing one of the largest online health and beauty retailers.
Visiting Iowa
Randolph County Commissioners will travel to Iowa to visit a Naturally Recycled Proteins plant before deciding whether to make a zoning change that would allow the company to locate a new plant near Union City.
Area residents protested the plant partly on grounds that they believe it will create a powerful odor around the plant.
The new plant would bring about 70 jobs to the area and processes chickens to make flavoring for pet food.
The commissioners will travel to Steamboat Rock, Iowa, to visit a NRP plant before making a decision on whether to grant the zoning change.
Joins panel
POET CEO Jeff Broin will join a panel at the Bloomberg New Energy Finance Summit 2011 in New York to discuss advancements in ethanol production.
He will take part in the panel discussion “Bioenergy Pathways” on April 6 with Ceres Inc. president and CEO Richard Hamilton, BP president of global biofuels business Phillip New and Novozymes president and CEO Steen Riisgaard.
