No real progress in SA talks (6/11/03)

Talks with teacher's union moving slowly

By By Michael [email protected]

BERNE — Contract negotiations between South Adams Schools and its teachers union are going nowhere, the corporation announced in a statement released at Tuesday’s board meeting.

South Adams Schools Supt. Connie Bailey explained to the board that the school and representatives from the union have met for a total of nine bargaining sessions, including two with a mediator appointed by the Indiana Education Employment Relations Board.

The negotiations have yielded “no real progress,” the release said.

The two sides cannot agree on how to divide the cost of health insurance coverage. Under the previous master contract that expired in August of 2002, the school corporation pays $9,044 of the $10,728 premium for the network family plan. The agreement also requires the school to cover 100 percent of all premium increases.

There is also disagreement regarding the school’s unfunded retirement benefits liability and the percentage of salary increases for the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 school years. According to the release, the union has “not withdrawn nor has it modified any of these demands.”

The next bargaining session has not been scheduled.

In other action Tuesday, the board voted unanimously to approve the hiring of two new teachers, including new head boys basketball coach Jason Ridge. Ridge will teach fourth grade at South Adams Middle School in addition to his basketball coaching duties.

Ridge will be formally announced as the new head coach Thursday, at 6 p.m., in the cafeteria of the South Adams Junior/Senior High School.

The school board also hired Robert Vickery on a temporary contract to fill a technology education teacher vacancy left by Herbert Bergman III at the high school. Bergman left the school recently to join the military, and will return to his teaching position once his military duties are complete.

In other action Tuesday, the board:

•Voted unanimously to approve the South Adams Elementary School Handbook. There were no changes made to the handbook, other than the adjustment of dates to comply with the upcoming school year.

•Approved the transportation handbook for South Adams bus drivers. There was already board policy regarding the conduct of bus drivers, but the school did not have an official handbook. The transportation handbook does not include any change of policy.

•Permitted the transfer of an undetermined amount of money from the capital projects fund into both the general fund and the transportation fund. This transfer will take place to bring the balance of the general and transportation funds up to zero by June 30.

At present, the general fund has a negative balance of $170,146.33, and the transportation fund is $100,399.41 in the hole.

The exact amount of the transfer won’t be determined until revenue and expenditures for June are figured.

The state of Indiana requires that these transfers be returned by December.

•Voted to hire Brenda Beitler to fill an open position as an office aide.

•Unanimously approved the conference request of Pat Yake, to attend the Paul Munger Conference, Bloomington, June 23-26.

•Approved the retirement of Rochelle Cook, head cook at South Adams Schools. Cook has been an employee at South Adams for 23 years.[[In-content Ad]]
