FORT WAYNE — The state berth was out of their reach, but the Patriots did about as well as they could have expected Saturday.
Jay County’s girls swim team wasn’t involved in any championship races at the Homestead sectional, but did manage to turn in personal- or season-best numbers in most of its events. It was tied for last with Blackford among the 11 teams with 18 points.
South Adams had one swimmer in a championship heat, but also ended the season without a state berth. The Starfires placed sixth as a team with 83 points.
Instead, host seventh-ranked host Homestead won nine of the 12 events, and thanks to making the state cut time will send at least two swimmers to Indianapolis in most events. It easily won the meet with 446 points.
Norwell, which was second with 234 points, was the only team to thwart the Spartans, grabbing the other three wins.
Lindsey Vesperry was the lone Jay County individual in swimming action at the meet as she raced in the consolation heat of the 100-yard freestyle. She finished 10th, turning in a personal-best time of 1-minute, 1.01 seconds.
Brittany Lewis made it to the diving finals, finishing 12th with a personal best 229 points. Lacey VanSkyock placed 14th in diving.
Vesperry was also in on a season-best time of the top Patriot relay team. She, Amber Kelly, Julie Sours and Brittany Laux finished 10th in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:15.12.
Vesperry, Sours, Ashley Imel and Andrea Collins were 11th in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:58.96, and Kelly, Collins, Imel and Laux were 11th with a season-best time of 4:31.10 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Haleigh Lehman was the only South Adams individual to reach a championship race. She finished sixth in that event, with a time of 1:06.82 in the 100-yard butterfly.
She was also ninth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:11.00.
Lehman was also in on the best Starfire finishes of the day, a couple of fifth-place relay efforts. She joined Robyn Habegger, Alyse Hoover and Chelsea Yoder for a time of 1:50.79 in the 200-yard freestyle relay and teamed with Yoder, Margaret Beymer and Talitha Maven to finish the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:07.18.
The other South Adams relay team — Habegger, Channing Yoder, Whitney Liechty and Courtney Hewitt — finished seventh in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:09.77.
Chelsea Yoder posted the next best individual finish for the Starfires as she took eighth in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.96. She was also 11th in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:07.68.
Shannon Muselman, Bethany Maven and Ashley Gresla were eighth, 11th and 12th in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 6:05.32, 6:20.39 and 6:30.21 respectively. Beymer added a 12th-place effort in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:03.06.[[In-content Ad]]
