Nominations open for award (03/13/2009)
Takin Note
Nominations are being accepted for the 12th annual Jack Cole Award for Volunteerism. The award was established by The Portland Foundation's board of directors to honor Cole's work as the foundation's first executive director.
A letter of recommendation should be sent describing why the nominee deserves the award along with the nominee's name and address.
The winner will be named at the annual meeting on May 20 and will receive a plaque and a cash award to be given to the charity of their choice.
The deadline for nominations is April 2 and they should be sent to The Portland Foundation office, 112 E. Main St. in Portland. For more information, call (260) 726-4260.
Crop insurance
The deadline to get multi-peril crop insurance through crop insurance agents and NAP coverage through the Farm Services Agency in Portland is March 15. NAP coverage is for sweet corn, pumpkins, tomatoes and other spring planted crops that commercial crop insurance is not available.
For more information call Katrina Wangler at the Jay County FSA office at (260) 726-4888. The office is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Alumni banquet
Ridgeville High School will have its 105th Alumni Banquet on May 9 at Deerfield Elementary School. Mail reservations, by May 1, to Virginia Hiatt, 110 E. Main St., Ridgeville, IN 47380 or call her at (765) 857-5645 (mornings only) or Cathy Hoover at (765) 857-2447.
School registration
Registration for Fort Recovery Public Preschool for the 2009-2010 school year will be held on April 21 at 7 p.m. in the Fort Recovery Elementary/Middle School Auditeria.
Parents will need to bring their child's birth certificiate, shot record and social security card. Children don't need to attend the meeting. For more information, call (419) 375-4131.
Eagle Scout
Daniel E. Flesher, 15, was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.
Flesher is a member of Winchester Boy Scout Troop No. 58.
To become Eagle Scout, he had to earn 21 merit badges and complete a service project, which was rebuilding the bleachers used by the Randolph County Antique Tractor Club..
He also camped more than 30 nights with his troop, hiked 79 miles and participated in 89 service hours.
He is a freshman at Winchester Community High School, a member of THE FORCE, Winter Percussion, Student Council, White River Blue Ribbon 4-H Club and Pleasant Hill Church youth group.
He is the son of Larry and Roxanne Flesher, rural Ridgeville; and the grandson of Byron and Wilma Jean Flesher, Portland.[[In-content Ad]]
