Norwell defeats Patriot netters

OSSIAN — The Patriots had a chance to pick up a couple of individual wins, but rain stopped them short.
Jay County High School’s boys tennis team lost 3-0 Monday to the host Norwell Knights. Two matches were left undecided because of the rain.
Norwell took the victory led by Tyler Smith’s 6-0, 6-0 shutout of the Patriots’ Josh Martin at No. 2 singles. Garhett Blackford of JCHS (4-9) fell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to Alex Hunter, and Josh Lykins and Zach Pryor lost 6-1, 6-2 to Tanner Mathews and Luke Hunter at No. 1 doubles.
Landry Inman won his first set 7-5 over Jordan Dickey at No. 1 singles, and the second was tied at 5-5 when the match was stopped. Jake Schwieterman and Evan Mathias dropped their first set 6-3 to Brooks Caley and Brandon Burch, won the second 7-5 and trailed 3-2 in the third.
Jay County lost the junior varsity match 5-0.

JV football loses
SHENANDOAH — Jay County fell behind in the opening quarter and was never able to pull even Monday in a 27-12 loss to the Shenandoah Raiders.
Shenandoah scored a touchdown in the opening quarter and had a 20-6 lead at halftime. The Patriots closed to within 20-12 with a quarter to play, but couldn’t find the end zone in the final 12 minutes.
Joey Link tossed a 45-yard touchdown pass to Chase Smith for JCHS, and Levi Stant had a 3-yard touchdown run.

Freshman football rolls
The Patriots’ defense came up big Monday in a 22-0 victory at home over the Bluffton Tigers.
Aaron Neal came up with an interception, and Will Watson recovered a pair of fumbles as JCHS blanked the Tigers. Phillip Newsome, Matt Blackford and Neal each scored a touchdown, and Drew Huffman and Neal ran in for two-point conversions.

Eagles top East Jay
MUNCIE — East Jay Middle School’s volleyball teams all suffered losses Monday to the host Delta Eagles. The eighth grade squad fell 25-16, 25-21, the seventh graders lost 25-12, 25-20, the sixth grade A team suffered a 25-8, 25-18 defeat and the sixth grade B team fell 25-12, 25-18.
Lizzy Schoenlein finished with seven assists, five service points and two aces for the eighth grade Chiefs (8-3), and Britlyn Dues added four kills and three service points. Kaylee Inman had kills, two digs and two service points for the seventh graders.
Hannah Phillips totaled three service points, including an ace, for the sixth grade A team, and Skye Wimmer had three service points and three aces for the B team.
