OSSIAN — Trying to come back against the Norwell Knights has been a futile task for most teams this year. It was no different for Jay County.

The Patriot boys basketball team fell behind early in the second quarter and never made a serious run at reclaiming the lead in a 50-41 loss at Norwell Tuesday night.

Norwell (15-4) has made a habit out of spreading the floor and holding the ball this season, especially when it has the lead. It has held 15 of its 19 opponents under 40 points — eight teams failed to break the 30-point barrier — and allows an average of just 33.2 points per game.

The Knights’ held Jay County to just 21 points through the opening three quarters and dominated the glass. Those two things, combined with a rough shooting night by the Patriots, spelled the difference.

“I felt like defensively we took away a majority of the things they wanted to do,” said first-year Norwell coach Doug Hicks. “I think offensively they are dynamite. I don’t think anybody teaches motion any better than coach Teagle does, and they run it to really a clinic for a high school team.

“Having the lead I think was the key. Being able to spread them out and make them come out and chase a little bit.”

The visiting team has won just once in the last 11 meetings between Norwell and Jay County.

“This group last year got hammered over there and they were pretty embarrassed,” said Hicks. “There wasn’t a one of them that forgot it. They came out tonight and I really felt like they were on a mission.”

Jay County coach Craig Teagle said he felt his team got tired early trying to deal with 6-foot-6-inch, 202-pound Matt Terhune and 6-foot-3, 200-pound Chandler Harnish. They caused problems for the Patriots by keeping both Corey Comer and Clint Muhlenkamp in foul trouble, and did plenty of damage inside.

Harnish scored nine of his game-high 19 points in the opening period, and he and Terhune grabbed 18 of their team’s 28 rebounds. The Knights had a 28-18 advantage on the glass for the game, helping them to protect the 19-10 lead they took with a 9-0 run bridging the first and second quarters.

The Patriots (13-6) never got closer than four points the rest of the way as they struggled from the outside, shooting 3-of-19 (16 percent) from 3-point range.

“(They were) just stronger and more athletic than we are,” said Teagle. “I mean, we just have to battle our butts off to stay in a game like that. Once they get the lead, they’re going to spread us out. Then we gave up some dribble drives. They’re just well-coached. They’re a good basketball team.

“We got fatigued early and that probably hurt some of our shooting, because we didn’t shoot the ball extremely well. But we had good looks. We’re just going to have to do a better job of getting our legs under us and knocking those in.”

Jay County took 14 more field-goal attempts than the home team, but made one fewer.

The Knights scored 11 of their 19 fourth-quarter points from the foul line. They were just 8-of-15 over the first 30 minutes of the game, but got the right people to the line at the end.

Sophomore Rhett Goodmiller came off the bench to hit all six of his free throw attempts in the final two minutes, using a one-handed method. And senior Luke Diehl hit 3-of-4 in the final minute.

“He came in in the South Adams game and closed that game out for us from the line. ... He’s a gamer,” said Hicks of Goodmiller. “It doesn’t look pretty, but Rhett doesn’t care how it looks. Rhett just wants to get it done and win, and that’s all that matters.”

Tyler Rigby was the lone Jay County player to reach double figures as he finished with a team-high 15 points. But he struggled from long distance, hitting just 1-of-10 from 3-point range.

Bruggeman added eight points and three assists, and John Retter had seven points and four rebounds.

Jay County fell behind in the first half and couldn’t quite get back in the game in a 41-34 loss to the Knights.

The Patriots trailed 20-14 at the half, and their deficit hovered around the 10-point mark for much of the second half. They got to within five points late in the game, but could not get any closer.

Derek Fillers paced the Norwell victory with 10 points. Evan Blinn added nine points.

Luke McClung was the top scorer for Jay County with seven points. Heath Rigby, Adam Garringer and Billy Wellman each added six points.[[In-content Ad]]
