Three runs in the bottom of the first inning gave the Jay County High School baseball team an early lead, but it managed just one run the rest of the way in a 16-4 loss to the visiting Norwell Knights.

The Patriots (3-4) got a leadoff double from Nathan Brown in the first inning, and Willie Mayfield added a single as part of the three-run frame. Norwell (4-4) put up three runs in the third inning, took the lead with a home run in the fourth and then scored eight in the fifth to take control.

Jon Pettus homered for JCHS in the third inning, and Brown and Mayfield each added a hit and a run. Chance Fuller and Andre Duke also had one hit apiece in the game.

Ty Huntsman took the loss, allowing four runs in four innings.

Broncos top softball

DALEVILLE - The Patriots slipped to 1-6 Tuesday as they fell 4-2 to the Daleville Broncos.

Danielle Wellman had two of Jay County's five hits in the loss, including a solo home run. The sophomore is hitting .565 with four doubles and a .870 slugging percentage this season.

Lexie Gierhart scored the other run for the Patriots, and Laura Castillo, Selena McKibben and Ranae Ray all added singles.

Rachelle Jackson took the loss, although just one of the four runs against her was earned. She allowed five hits and five walks in 5 1/3 innings and struck out five batters.

JV baseball rolls

WINCHESTER - Jordan McBride and Jordan LeMaster led the Patriots to their second win of the year, 13-3 in six innings over the Winchester Golden Falcons.

McBride and LeMaster each finished with two hits and two RBIs. Devin Conatser and Shawn Homan added a hit, an RBI and two runs apiece, and Matt Landfair also scored twice.

Brandon Ferner picked up the victory for JCHS (2-4) as he pitched two innings.

JV softball cruises

Jay County racked up 10 first-inning runs in rolling to a 15-2, five-inning win over the visiting Muncie Central Bearcats.

Taylor Franklin singled and scored three runs for the Patriots (2-4), and Krista Taylor scored twice and drove in two runs. Randa Gillespie had two hits, and Paige Alsip and Abbey Vance added two runs apiece.

Vance earned the win, allowing two runs on two hits in four innings while striking out five.[[In-content Ad]]
