October permits add up to $1.2 million (11/04/06)

A new home and garage and an addition to a commercial building topped the list of permits issued in October by Jay/Portland Building and Planning.

Brian Kunkler, 2845 South 500 East, Portland, estimated the cost of his new house and garage at $260,000.

Also, Fisher Packing Co., 300 W. Walnut St., Portland, applied for a permit for a $250,000 addition to the existing commercial building. The owner of the company plans to expand the business north and enlarge the processing and retail areas.

Cost estimates for projects issued permits totaled $1,227,376.

New employee

The Fort Recovery Insurance Agency has hired a new employee.

Robert Walter, a Columbus, Ohio, native, now resides in Fort Recovery with his wife Kelly and works for the company.

He is the son-in-law of Bob and Karen Meiring. Walter is looking forward to becoming involved in the community.

Achieves certification

A physician who practices in Anderson recently passed his recertification exam.

Dr. Armand V. Gallanosa, an employee of Preferred Family Physicians of Anderson, received the recertification through the American Board of Family Medicine. He is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine, and did his residency at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie. He has worked at the Anderson Preferred office since 1996.

There also are Preferred Family Physicians offices in Portland and Hartford City.

Holiday bazaar set

The staff and residents of Swiss Village Retirement Community, Berne, will hold a Holiday Bazaar on Nov. 10 and 11.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 10, and from 9 a.m. until noon on Nov. 11. A variety of handmade holiday items such as Christmas decorations, ceramics and rugs will be for sale.

The bazaar will take place in the boutique and social corner at Swiss Village, 1350 W. Main St., Berne. Parking will be available in the circle drive at the main entrance.

Sales rise slightly

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. recently announced a slight increase in sales in October.

The company announced a 0.5 percent increase in sales, which is the smallest gain in several years, The Wall Street Journal reported this week.

Wal-Mart sales gains have shrunk in recent years because of rivals such as Target Corp. Also, the company's size makes it difficult to achieve big gains.

There is a Wal-Mart SuperCenter in Portland.

President and COO named

A Fort Wayne native has been named president and chief operating officer of Indiana Michigan Power company.

Helen J. Murray, who has been with the company since 1977, was chosen for the position. She began working for the company in Fort Wayne as a programmer, and later was name administrative assistant.

In 1994, Murray was promoted to district manager in St. Joseph/Benton Harbor, Mich. She transferred to I&M's parent company American Electric Power in Columbus, Ohio, in 1996. She most recently served with AEP as vice president of customer operations.

Murray earned a bachelor's degree in computer technology at Purdue University, and holds a master's of business administration degree from the University of Notre Dame.

To acquire Caremark

CVS Corp. has agreed to purchase pharmacy-benefits manager Caremark Rx Inc.

The company will be purchased at a cost of $21 billion. Combining the companies is expected to lead to new services and lower drug prices.

There are CVS stores in Portland and Dunkirk.

Sets new records

Net income for The Andersons, Inc., has reached an all-time high, blowing away previous records.

For the third quarter, the company earned $8.4 million. During the same three-month period in 2005, the company reported a net loss of $0.6 million. Also, for the first nine months of this year, net income was $22.6 million, compared to $10.8 million in the first nine months of 2005.

There is an Andersons in Dunkirk.

Ossian factory closing

Johnson Controls, Ossian, has closed after losing a major contract.

The plant, which makes seats for General Motors vehicles and employs 200, closed on Friday.

Work One of Wells County has been helping the employees find new jobs. Many of the employees had worked at the factory for six to 20 years.

Record sales reported

Franklin Electric Co. Inc. has earned a record $16.8 million third quarter income.

The company had an income of $13.2 million during the same quarter last year. Diluted earnings per share for this quarter were 72 cents, a 26 percent increase from last year.

In a related matter, the company was named in the Oct. 30 issue of Forbes magazine as one of the 200 Best Small Companies. This is the fifth year the business has earned this honor.
