No opposing team has been able to stop Jay County. But the storms did so Monday.
The Jay County Summer Swim Team had a 347-74 lead over Randolph County Monday when lightning forced the meet at Portland Pool to be halted. But, since fewer than half of the 80 events were completed, it will not go in the record book.
Jay County, which stands at 4-0, won all 10 relays and 15 of 17 individual events, breaking more records along the way.
Monday’s record again came in the 8-and-younger girls division. The 100-yard medley relay team of Madi Long, Sophie Bader, Anne Vormohr and Cori Stone broke the previous team record by four seconds and the pool record by 2.5 second with a time of 1-minute, 29.95 seconds.
Caitlin Mark and Zane Shreve each won the long freestyle and butterfly in the 9-10-year-old girls and boys divisions respectively. Adding single wins were Bader, Madi Long, Adam Young, Sok Vormohr, Jocelyn Mann, Michaela Long, Lucas Holcomb, Alysha Miller, Mary Hudson, Aaron Hudson and Brittany Teagle.
J-R opens at 1-3
The Jay-Randolph American Legion baseball team split its first two games Saturday, but dropped both in double-header action Sunday.
It defeated Delphi in the opening game of the season, 2-0, but lost the second half of the twin bill at Winchester 14-3. At Troy, Ohio, Sunday the team fell 9-1 and 12-6.
Cory Friend keyed the lone victory, shutting out Delphi on just five hits. Casey Green had a single and two RBIs, and Jay County’s Tony McCowan scored a run.
Corey Locke (Jay County) took the game-two loss, giving up nine runs on eighth hits in four innings.
Andy Hughes (Jay County) finished 2-for-3 and drove in the only J-R run in the first loss to Troy. McCowan also had a hit.
Josh Shatto (Jay County) took the loss, giving up six runs — five earned — on six hits in five innings.
In the second game against Troy, Aaron Bogenschutz (Jay County) finished with a hit, a run and an RBI. Green suffered the defeat.[[In-content Ad]]
