Open house at Jay's museum set March 28 (03/20/04)
Taking note
The Jay County Historical Society Museum at 903 E. Main St. in Portland will host an open house on Sunday, March 28, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Featured at the event will be the 1906 letter by Jay County’s Civil War hero Louis J. Bruner and a display about Albert U. Rupel, Jay County’s pioneer aviator.
Come and see the changes or visit for the first time. Admission is free, and donations are welcome.
The museum has received a grant from The Portland Foundation for $3,680, with a portion of the money coming from the Clyde E. Geeting Memorial Trust, which was established to benefit historical facilities.
This money will help cover the cost of replacing the ceiling and lighting and adding insulation and ceiling fans in the large Farm Room at the back of the museum.
The books “Ghost Towns,” by Miriam Edmundson and James Walter Fiers and “Early Post Offices” by Treva Depoy have been revised by Janice Stucky and are available for sale at the museum.
SPRING BREAK AT MUNCIE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM
Muncie Children’s Museum is celebrating “Beach Week” for those not going away on spring break, complete with sand and handmade Hawaiian leis (made by you).
Wear shorts, tank tops and flip flops and make free sand art in the museum store.
Events planned are “Celebrate Spring” on Sunday March 21, at 2:00 p.m.
“Beach Blanket Bingo” on Tuesday March 23, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
“Build your own Sandcastle” on Wednesday March 24, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
“Seaside Collage Art” on Thursday March 25, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
“Beach Volleyball” on Friday March 26, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
“Limbo and other Beach Games” on Saturday March 27, from 12 noon to 3 p.m.
“Island Karaoke” on Sunday March 28, at 2 p.m.
“Beach Relays” on Tuesday March 30, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
“Make a Seashell Buddy” on Wednesday March 31, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
“Pineapple Bowling” on Thursday April 1, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
“Hula Dance Party” on Friday, April 2, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. It is located at 515 S. High St. in Muncie.
