Open house set at Head Start
Taking Note
Head Start, 406 E. Arch St. in Portland, will have an open house tonight from 5 to 7 p.m.
Head Start is a preschool program for children ages 3 to 5 based on income eligibility.
Anyone wanting to tour the classrooms or interested in volunteering is welcome.

Scholar
Danielle Bruns, Liberty Texas, has been named an All-American Scholar of Excellence in English. She was nominated by her teacher Christine Pearson. Danielle will appear in the United States Achievement Academy’s yearbook which is published nationally.
She is the daughter of Kevin and Sharon Bruns and the granddaughter of former Portland residents Charles and Lynda Bruns. She is also the niece of Willis and Jo Jordan, Portland.
Rummage sales
Dunkirk will have several rummage sales going on in the city on Friday and Saturday. Anyone wanting to have a sale, may obtain a permit at the Dunkirk City Building, 131 S. Main St.
Free supplies
Free school supplies will be available Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Wayne Township Trustee’s office at 123 W. Main St. in Portland.
Any individual or organization wanting to donate supplies may drop them off at the office.
The Jay County Salvation Army and United Way of Jay County are sponsoring the event.
Dean’s list
Two Portland residents were named to the dean’s list at Wabash College in Crawfordsville for maintaining a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Kaleb Hemmelgarn, a senior, the son of Doug and Karen Hemmelgarn.
Jared Valentine, a sophomore, the son of Mark and Marianne Valentine.[[In-content Ad]]
