Open house set at museum
Taking Note
Family and guests are invited to walk off that holiday meal with a leisurely walk back in time at the Jay County Historical Society Museum open house on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
The museum is located at 903 E. Main St. in Portland. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Indiana farmers and others with an interest in agriculture will have an opportunity to learn about recent changes as a result of the Working Families Tax Relief Act of 2004 and the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 and tax planning options.
The Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service will present a closed circuit television discussion of year end tax planning and management implications of recent tax law changes on Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Work One office, 112 N. Ship St. in Portland.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Jay County Chapter of the Salvation Army is in need of volunteers this holiday season. If you like meeting people, bell ringers are needed to collect donations at various locations.

Also the Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for volunteers to make a difference in your community. Free disaster training and orientation is available to Red Cross volunteers.
Volunteers may become a disaster relief worker, send emergency messages for our armed forces, teach people CPR and first aid or help out in the offices in Hartford City, Muncie, Portland and Winchester.

LifeStream Services’ third AngelWish campaign is under way, collecting items for seniors and isolated individuals for the holidays.
Toiletry items (bath soap, hand lotion, shampoo and deodorant) and bigger items (robes, sleepwear, phones with large numbers, coffee makers, food, small pots and pans, towels, washclothes and blankets) are being accepted through Wednesday, Dec. 15.
Donations may be dropped off at the Yorktown office, 1701 Pilgrim Boulevard, just off Ind. 32, east of Yorktown; the Marion office, 1530 W. Second St.; the Winchester office, 325 S. Oak St., Suite 208; the Anderson office, 1125 Broadway; or the Civic Center in New Castle, 100 S. Main St.

MILES NEEDED
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Indiana is asking frequent travelers across the state to contribute frequent flier miles to help make wishes come true for children with life-threatening medical conditions.
Over 70% of ill children’s wishes involve travel. Most major airlines, including American, America West, British Airways, Continental, Delta, Northwest, Southwest, United and U.S. Air have created programs that allow members of their frequent traveler loyalty programs to donate their unused miles to charity.
