Optimist wins first over Vance (05/11/04)

Portland Optimist evened its record at 1-1 Monday, winning a barn burner against Vance Indoor Comfort 20-18 in Portland Junior League Minor League softball action.

In Minor League games played Saturday Portland Forge shut out Optimist 13-0, and REMC topped Vance 8-6. There were also a pair of Rookie League games Saturday with Graphic Printing defeating Loy Auction and Real Estate 23-15, and First National Bank slamming Tyson 24-9.

Williams Auto Parts topped Ponderosa 11-3 in the lone Rookie League baseball game Monday.

Leanne Horn, Selena McKibben and Shelby Gierhart each had three hits to lead Optimist in its win Monday. Sarah Davenport singled in her first at bat and then walked four times, scoring four runs.

Horn, McKibben, Gierhart, Meriah Horniday, Carly Cline, Alysia Rigby and Hanna Atienzo each scored twice.

Brandy Craig, Kristi Elmore and Jordan McMillan each had a trio of hits for Vance. Elmore and Erica Butcher scored two runs apiece.

Katie Butcher had two hits, including a triple, in Forge’s victory over Optimist Saturday. She also scored two runs.

Kayla Phillips doubled and scored twice, and Ashley Caupp had a single and two runs. Meagan Ferguson also scored twice.

Horniday had the lone hit for Optimist.

REMC 7, Vance 6

The top of the order powered REMC, with leadoff hitter Liz Walker and No. 3 hitter Laura Castillo scoring two runs apiece.

Walker and Castillo each had a pair of singles in the contest. Sharing the No. 2 spot in the order Megan Nickols singled and scored a run and Ranae Ray scored once.

Kristi Elmore had three hits and a run for Vance.

First National 24, Tyson 9

Tasya Smith, Rachelle Jackson, Alex Loy and Lexie Gierhart each scored three runs for First National.

Hitting in the cleanup spot, Jackson knocked a home run in her first at bat. She doubled in her second and added a single in her third.

Emily DeVoe also hit a home run, and Gierhart had a pair of doubles. Brittani Miller finished with three hits, including a double, and scored twice.

Alexis Cook had three hits and two runs for Tyson, and Mikayla Gross and Mary Taylor added two hits and two runs apiece.

Graphic 23, Loy 15

Hannah Ainsworth went a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of triples and four runs scored to lead Graphic.

Alysia Bye also went 4-for-4, and had a double and four runs. Victoria Williams had three hits and scored three times, Katie Snyder hit a pair of home runs, and Abby Freyburgher homered once and scored twice.

Lindsay Myers and Kaitlen Petro each had two hits and three runs for Loy.

EJ wins big

The East Jay baseball team won twice Saturday to improve to 3-0 on the year. It defeated Cowan 37-1 and followed with a 15-0 win over Muncie Burris.

East Jay had a 6-1 lead after the first inning of the first game, and went wild in the second and fourth. It scored 15 times in the second and another 15 in the fourth in the blowout.

Four different hitters had perfect days, with Michael Jobe finishing 5-for-5. Justin Mann and Phillip Powell were each 4-for-4, and Colton Lombardo finished 3-for-3.

Mann had a triple and scored five runs, and Josh Ludy doubled and also scored five times. Jobe and Billy Wellman scored four runs apiece.

Jobe knocked an inside-the-park home run, Jobe, Wellman, and Dalton McGill each had a pair of triples and Adam Garringer added one triple. Powell finished with a pair of doubles, and Lombardo had one.

Mann struck out five batters in two innings for the win.

Jobe circled the bases for two more home runs in the second game, and he also had a double as he scored three times. McGill was 2-for-2 with two runs, and Mann, Ludy and Kyle Simmons each scored twice.

Garringer and Trey Dunn added one triple apiece.

Ludy tossed four solid innings for the win, allowing just one hit while striking out nine.[[In-content Ad]]
