Oratorical contest winners announced (01/31/06)

The Optimist Oratorical contest was recently held at area schools with the topic “My Future is Bright because...”

Winning first place for the girl’s division at Redkey Elementary School was Baleigh Wiemer. She is a third grader and the daughter of Bill and Tammy Boltz and Bruce Wiemer. Winning first place in the boy’s division was fifth grade student Shelby Wendel. He is the son of Chad and Jennifer Wendel.

Alternates were Kaylee Rodeffer, fourth grade, and Cade Price, fifth grade.

Winning first place in the girl’s division at East Elementary was Alyson Lucas, a fourth grader and the daughter of Stephanie Tague. Winning first place in the boy’s division was fifth grader Brock McFarland. He is the son of Chad and Kim McFarland.

Alternates were fifth graders, Jenna Barber and John Smith.

Winning first place in the girl’s division at Judge Haynes Elementary was Alexis Cook. She is in fifth grade and is the daughter of Christie Cook. Winning first place in the boy’s division was fourth grader Zane Shreve. His parents are Rick and Linda Shreve.

Alternates are Cheyanne Dull, fourth grade, and Zach James, fifth grade.

Winning first place in the girl’s division at Bloomfield Elementary was Anna Muhlenkamp, a fifth grader and the daughter of Kevin and Linda Muhlenkamp. Winning first place in the boy’s division was fourth grader Nicholas Leuthold. His parents are Mitch and Karen Leuthold.

Alternates were second grader Meygan Maloney and fifth grader Josh Martin.

Winning first place in the girl’s division at General Shanks Elementary was Rachael Dill, a fourth grader and the daughter of Jeff and Emily Dill. Winning first place in the boy’s division was fifth grader Landry Inman, son of Kevin and Theresa Inman.

Alternates were Abbigayle Dunlavy, fourth grade, and Alexander Dunn, fifth grade.

All winners will compete in the Jr. Oratorical Speech Contest at Bloomfield Elementary on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 6:30 p.m.

Word challenge

East Jay Middle School students recently participated in the Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge. Students answered oral and written questions challenging their vocabulary skills. Ms. Kilander is the academic coach.

Lydia Rowles was the sixth grade winner, Anthony Seelnacht was seventh grade winner and Jessica Carducci won for eighth grade.

They will compete in the state championship on March 20. Carducci also qualified and competed at the state level last year as a seventh grader.

Honor roll announced

The following students made the honor roll for the second nine week grading period at West Jay Middle School.

Making the all A honor roll for sixth grade was Devin Conatser, Morton Garringer, Marissa Murrell, Megan Roush and Matthew Shrack.

Students making the sixth grade A-B honor roll were Jessica Chittum, Dylan Friddle, Aaron Helm, Zach Johnson, Mackenzie McIntire, Tiffany Moore, Melinda Penrod, Allyssa Raines, Kelsey Sell, Dustin Selvey, Leanna Shawver and Haley Tomlinson.

Making the seventh grade all A honor roll was Taylor Burris, Brooke Byers, Anneliese Jetmore, Anthony Skeens and Dakota Steed.

Seventh graders making the A-B honor roll were Kylie Barber, Amanda Bell, Tyler Claycomb, Breanna Dahistrom, Talir Ellis, Haley Franklin, Branda Geesaman, Macey Gerber, Shayla Gibbs, Austin Harris, Deniann Hough, Sam Kreps, Lynsi McCallister, Chris Miller, Kim Nibarger, Wesley Price, Emily Rathbun, Samantha Rhodehamel, Winona Westlake and Damon White.

Students making the eighth grade A honor roll were Dillon Easton and Wil Masters.

Eighth graders making the A-B honor roll were Isaac Beaty, Charles Burress, Dillon Corn, Brittany Crawmer, Michael A. Daniels, Christian Fischer, Patrick Grady, Joe Monnin, Sarah Myers, Stormy Reynolds, Josh Roush, Sarah Shrack and Brittney Watson.

Story time

Jay County Public Library will have a family story time on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for all ages. Children are invited to wear their pajamas. Stories are based on a theme and there will be a craft or activity.[[In-content Ad]]
