Oratorical winners announced (1/27/05)
Taking Note
Winners of the Optimist Oratorical contest at Bloomfield Elementary School were Chelsea Hummel, daughter of Randy and Cheryl Hummel and Josh Wellman, son of Greg and Kathy Wellman.
Alternates were Holly Wellman, daughter of Dennis and Cindy Wellman and Ed Muhlenkamp, son of Luke and Mary Sue Muhlenkamp.
Contest winners at Redkey Elementary School were Marissa Murrell, daughter of John and Rita Murrell and Morton Garringer, son of Wade and Susan Garringer.
Runners-up were Sydney Evans and Devin Conatser.
East Elementary School contest winners were Lyndee Evans, daughter of John and Lisa Evans, and Aaron Loy, son of Doug and Kim Loy.
Runners up were Michelle Bruggeman and Heng Hong.
Fifth grade students wrote and delivered a speech on the topic “My Hero Is.....” Winners from all seven elementary schools will compete in the Jr. Oratorical Speech Contest at Judge Haynes Elementary on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 6:30 p.m.
HISTORY CONTEST
Thomas “Trey” E. Dunn III, won the Mississinewa Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution American History contest for 2004-05.
He won for his essay titled Along the Trail with Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery, May 1804 to September 1806.
He is an eighth grade student at East Jay Middle School and the son of Dr. Tom and Rita Dunn, Portland.
DEAN’S LIST
Several area residents have been named to the dean’s list at Ball State University for the 2004 fall semester.
From Geneva is Lesli Chaffins, Christopher Clemons and Casey Gentis. From Bryant is Megan Houser, David Knoth and Michelle Newton.
Dunkirk residents were Nicole Byron, Corrine Erwin, Matthew Henry, Rachel Ridgway, Mischa Staton, Kendra Van Skyock, Lisa Vanskyock, Lonnie Ward, Hillary Warner, Ryan Wenger and Nicole Whitesell. From Pennville is Shauna Brown.
From Portland is Erin Arnold, Robin Bisel, Kelli Budde, Austin Chapman, Ashley DeWitt, Melanie Martin, Beth Muhlenkamp, Stephen Norman, Corey Price, Hannah Spahr, Ashley Tschannen, Howard Wickelman and Shanna Young.
From Redkey was Kristin Janak. Ridgeville residents were Jessie Goodhew, Autumn Harris, Samantha Sheller, Ryan Taylor and Brittany Ullom.

Portland resident Rebecca Freyburgher, a licensed practical nurse, has been included in the Manchester Who’s Who Among Executive and Professional Women in Nursing and Healthcare 2005/2006 “Honors Edition.”
She is an on call nurse at Jay County Hospital and has worked at Briarwood Manor in Coldwater, Ohio for 15 years.
MUSEUM EVENTS
The Muncie Children’s Museum recently announced its events for the remainder of January.
On Friday, Jan. 28 “The Polar Express” will be read and children will make their own snowflake.
On Saturday, Jan. 29, children can hear a story and will make safety tips and a police badge.
On Sunday, Jan. 30 children can make their own bike and listen to the reading of “Bicycle Race.”
Programs are held at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The museum is located at 515 S. High St. in Muncie. For more information, call (765) 286-1660 or visit www.munciechildrensmuseum.com.
MINNETRISTA EVENTS
Dane Starbuck, author of “Goodriches: An American Family,” will introduce listeners to the Goodrich family of Winchester on Wednesday, Feb. 9, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Minnetrista Cultural Center.
The Goodrich family created multiple companies and made many political, intellectual and philanthropic contributions to society.
The cost is $5 and registration deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 2. For more information, or to register, call (765) 213-3549.
