Oratorical winners named (01/30/2009)

Taking Note

An oratorical contest was held at Pennville Elementary School with the theme ""For me, optimism is..."

The boy winner was Troy Glattli, a fifth grade student and the son of Ed and Brenda Glattli, Dunkirk.

The boy runner-up was Colton Bost, also a fifth grader and the son of John and Sandy Bost, Pennville.

The girl winner was Emily Jobe, a fifth grade student and the daughter of Brian and Lisa Jobe, Pennville.

The girl runner-up was Kyndal Miller, a fourth grader and the daughter of Craig and Vicki Miller, Pennville.

Winners will compete in the county contest at Jay County Christian Academy on Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m.

Awards banquet

Fort Recovery Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual banquet in March to present the "Citizen of the Year" and "Hall of Fame" awards.

The "Citizen" award is given to someone who has given outstanding service to the Fort Recovery community during 2008 and the "Hall of Fame" award is presented to someone who has given outstanding service to the Fort Recovery community in past years.

Nominations are being accepted for these awards through Feb. 10 and forms are available at Fort Recovery Library, Post Office, Mercer Savings Bank, Second National Bank and First Financial Bank.

The banquet will be held Sunday, March 8, at the Fort Recovery Middle School Auditeria at 6 p.m.

New position

Former Jay County resident Debra (Clark) Searcy began serving as the president of the Indiana Extension Educator's Association 4-H Youth Section in September.

Searcy is a graduate of Redkey High School and was a nine-year 4-H member. While attending Taylor University, she worked as an assistant in the Jay County Extension Office during the summer.

She earned a bachelor's degree from Taylor University and a master's degree from Ball State University. Working as an extension educator for 29 years in Franklin and Wayne Counties, Searcy is also county extension director in Wayne County.

Searcy's mother Nina Clark resides in Jay County.

Grief Camp

State of the Heart Hospice Camp BEARable will be held on July 24 through July 26 for youth dealing with grief and loss issues.
