Outstanding start for Gray at Grey (04/16/07)
JCHS boys golf
DECATUR - On a gray day at Grey Goose, Adam Gray was in his element.
Playing in cold, wet conditions on a dreary Saturday, the Jay County sophomore unleashed a 1-under-par 35 on the front nine at the Bellmont Invitational and finished second overall with a 76. His effort led the Patriot boys golf team to a fifth-place score of 366, just one stroke behind fourth-place Norwell at the 10-team event, in its first action of the year.
The host Braves won at 346, followed by Garrett (348) and Heritage (357). South Adams was seventh at 389.
Gray was on fire on the front nine, posting pars or birdies on six of the nine holes. He birdied the 520-yard, par-5 second, and later notched back-to-back birdies on the 390-yard seventh and 347-yard eighth, both par fours.
He completed the front nine with a par on the 162-yard, par-3 ninth, and had a one-stroke lead over Norwell's Drew Imel at the midway point.
Gray, who had nothing worse than a bogey throughout the day, added four more pars on the back nine, closing his round by playing even on the 122-yard, par-3 17th and 372-yard, par-4 18th.
But Imel was 2-under-par on holes 10 through 14 and had three back-nine birdies to edge Gray by a single stroke.
Gray Suman had the No. 2 score for Jay County as he finished in 18th place. The senior had three pars, two on the back nine, for a 91.
Chris Shannon followed in 27th with a 98, and Luke Darby rounded out the team score in 31st with a 101. Jonathon Fennig had a 102.
The top score for the Starfires on the day came from Jay Schwartz, who placed 11th with an 88. Phil Goodwin was just two strokes behind his teammate in 15th.
Randy Potts finished 36th at 104, Thurman Pursley was 41st with a 107 and Ryan Moser placed 45th at 113.[[In-content Ad]]
