Area businesses, industries, clubs and organizations are invited to participate in the holiday Parade of Lights at 6 p.m. on Nov. 20.

Parade line-up is at 5 p.m. at East Jay Middle School in Portland. The parade is sponsored by the Portland Rotary Club and is held in conjunction with WinterFest.

Cash prizes of $100 will be awarded for business/industry, best animal entry, adult organizations, best decorated vehicle, youth organizations and best over-all entry.

CHAMBER DINNER

Dunkirk Area Chamber of Commerce will sponsor its annual dinner meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 10, in West Jay Community Center, 125 Hoover St., Dunkirk City Park.

Guest speaker will be Bluffton Mayor Ted Ellis, who is also the president of the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns.

The program will start at 6:30 p.m.

Deadline for reservations will be Nov. 1, and cost will be $10 per person. The cost to sponsor a table is $50.

Theme for the event is: “Giving thanks to our members.”

Dunkirk award

The executive committee of the Dunkirk Area Chamber of Commerce is introducing a new award — the Community Committment Award — to honor individuals who have contributed to the community in various ways.

Chamber officials said the honoree can be someone who has contributed to the community with dedication and years of service; a person who has contributed financially over the years; or a person whose name recognition has brought notoriety to the community.

The recipient does not have to be a resident of Dunkirk. He or she can be someone who has previously resided in the community or someone who has had an emotional commitment to the Dunkirk community, chamber officials said.

Deadline for submitting nominations is Nov. 1, Chamber officials said.

To nominate an individual for this award, persons are asked to send a letter with the name of the nominee and reasons for selecting him or her to Dunkirk Area Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 291, Dunkirk, IN. 47336.

PASSES TEST

A rural Pennville resident has passed the Indiana State Board of Nursing test to become a Registered Nurse.

Amanda Horner works at Bluffton Regional Medical Center as a medical/surgical nurse. She is also a first responder for Pennville. She has begun training to become a firefighter for the Pennville Volunteer Fire Department.

Since she began working for the hospital, Horner has earned certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Electrocardiograms.

Also passing the test to become an RN were Jane Lampman and Jennifer Loshe.

NEW SYSTEM

Bluffton Regional Medical Center has implemented a new computer-based charting system, which will increase efficiency in the emergency rooms.

The hospital began using the T-System EV on Sept. 29. The software can automatically bring up chart templates for nurses to fill in and can print items that are typically handwritten. The data is linked to other computers so old charts can be accessed easily.

HORMONE SEMINAR

A “Good Nutrition for Happy Hormones” seminar will be held Thursday, Oct. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at Bluffton Regional Medical Center, 303 S. Main St., Bluffton.

The free class will teach women how to manage hormones by using good nutrition. Wanda Cullison, a registered and certified dietitian, will be the featured speaker.

MEETINGS

The Youth Committee of the East Central Indiana Workforce Investment Board will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 9, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the WorkOne Center, 201 E. Charles St., Muncie.

The meeting was originally scheduled for Oct. 19.

The East Central Indiana Workforce Investment Board Development Committee will meet Friday, Oct. 22, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Muncie WorkOne Center, in the first floor training room.

The meeting will begin at 12:30 in lower conference room A with the Staff Recognition Luncheon for the Delaware WorkOne Staff.

The committee meeting will begin at about 1:15 p.m.

100 YEARS

Moser Motors recently celebrated 100 years of business.

The auto dealer has locations in Portland and Berne. It was started in 1904 by A.J. Moser and was originally called A.J. Moser and Co. It began as a machine shop and evolved into a Ford dealership.

A celebration banquet was held Tuesday at Swiss Village Inc. in Berne.

NEW NAME

Adams County Memorial Hospital of Decatur has a new name.

The new facility, which is scheduled to open in July 2005, will be called Adams Memorial Hospital.

The structure will be located at 1110 Mercer Ave.

Hospital board member Victor B. Porter said in a press release, “The name committee considered this a good title as it incorporates the idea of county ownership as well as signifying the health services and benefits offered at the various facilities as a network available to a wider area.”

BOOT CAMP

The Restaurant and Hospitality Association of Indiana will be holding a Restaurant Operations Boot Camp for new restaurateurs on Thursday, Oct. 21, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The class for people entering the restaurant industry will be held at Monarch Beverage, 3737 Waldemere, Indianapolis. Attendees will learn about opening, owning and operating a restaurant in Indiana.

The event in is conjunction with Quality for Indiana Taxpayers and the Indiana Hospitality and Tourism Foundation.

Marsha P. Ryan, president and CEO of Indiana Michigan Power, introduced her leadership team for the company’s Fort Wayne headquarters this week.

Indiana Michigan Power is a division of American Electric Power. The company will have external affairs offices in Indianapolis and Lansing, Mich.

FORUM

An informational forum for small businesses will be held on Thursday, Nov. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Indiana Government Center South Auditorium, 402 W. Washington St., Indianapolis.

The event is sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration, Internal Revenue Service, the National Federation of Independent Business, Better Business Bureau and the Indiana Department of Revenue. Products and services available to help businesses of any size become more efficient and knowledgeable will be discussed.
