Patriot baseball destroys Delta in five, 16-3 (05/03/05)

PORTLAND — The Jay County baseball team got dominant pitching from Chad Keen Saturday. On Monday, it was dominant all around.

The Patriots destroyed the Delta Eagles in the first meeting between the two teams in several seasons, rolling to a 16-3 victory in five innings.

Keen again was instrumental in the victory, going 3-for-4 from his third spot in the order. Two of his hits were doubles and he also scored twice and drove in a run.

John Retter and Eric Somers each had two hits and three runs, and Retter also had two RBIs. Rhett Retter drove in three runs and scored two, Josh Ludy doubled, drove in two runs and scored two runs and Trent Bailey had two RBIs.

Shatto allowed just one hit as he gave up three runs in five innings for the win. He struck out five and walked three.

SA baseball falls

ROCKFORD — The South Adams baseball team never led Monday, giving up two runs in four different innings in an 8-4 loss to the Parkway Panthers.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning the Starfires pulled to within one in the top of the third. However, the Panthers scored twice in the bottom of the frame and South Adams never pulled closer than two runs again.

Austin Givens took the defeat as he allowed four runs — three earned — on four hits in two innings. Mike Farris and Peter Jansson each allowed two runs — one earned — in two innings of work.

Lukas Baumgartner finished 2-for-4 for the Starfires with a run scored. Will Grandlinard was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

FR athletes awarded

Several Fort Recovery High School athletes were honored Monday night as the school held its scholastic banquet.

Winning the OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award were Megan Wenning, Dusty Guggenbiller and Stan Roessner. The award, named after the two-time Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State, is given to athletes who promote sportsmanship and display ethics and integrity both in their school and community.

Wenning picked up a second honor as well as she and Dusty Tobe were recognized as this year’s OHSAA scholar athletes from FRHS. To win the award the athlete must have the highest grade point average in their class and have earned a minimum of four varsity letters.
