Patriot boys earn first win

UNION CITY — After a difficult first week, the Jay County High School boys tennis team picked up its first victory Monday 5-0 over the Union City Indians.
Derek Smith rolled to a shutout victory at No. 2 singles over Levi Hughes. Brad Leuthold won 6-2, 6-1 over Ben VanCamp at No. 1 singles, and the Patriots took the No. 3 singles match by forfeit.
JCHS (1-2) went to tiebreakers in the first set of each doubles match, winning them both. Chance Fuller and Jordan McBride went on to defeat Zac Holt and Levi Thornburh 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, and Morton Garringer and Landry Inman rolled through their second set for a 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 win over Luciando Band and Derrick Garland.

Freshmen fall
Jay County’s freshman football team dropped its season opener 33-8 Monday to the visiting Delta Eagles.

Jason Houston scored the lone touchdown of the game for the Patriots on a 9-yard reception from Wes Hibbard. Andrew Eley added the 2-point conversion on a pass from Hibbard, who finished with 51 passing yards.

Preston Keen led the defense with 10 tackles.

Shade wins
The winning rider in the inaugural Colavita-Zipp Speed Weaponry time trial bicycle race in Portland Sunday averaged more than 27 miles per hour.
Matt Shade of the Fit Living team turned in the top overall time of 43 minutes, 32 seconds. He averaged 27.57 miles per hour on the 20-mile course, most of which was traveld on county road 200 South.
Court Maple of the M.O.B. Squad was the runner-up in 43:45.
Dan Hiller of the Portland-based AeroCat team finished the course in 48:22. Tim Poole a co-owner of AeroCat turned in a time of 51:57.
Theresa Inman of Portland also competed in the race, finishing in 1 hour, 4 minutes, 15 seconds.
The race also included two riders in the 12-and-younger division with Callia Tellez finishing in 1:13:46 and Sydney Stiener turning in a time of 1:38:58.[[In-content Ad]]
