Patriot freshmen fall to Anderson

The Patriots were unable to overcome their slow start.
Jay County High School’s freshman boys basketball team slipped into a double-digit deficit in the opening quarter Thursday and couldn’t come all the way back as it fell 33-27 to the visiting Anderson Indians.
The Patriots allowed an 11-0 run to open the game. They closed to within a point at the half, but were never able to claim the lead.
Adam Dirksen finished with 10 points for the Patriots (7-3). Joey Springer added nine points.
Grant Kelley paced Anderson as he matched Dirksen with 10 points. Dionte Raines followed with nine points, and Jaylon Roberson added eight.

Eagles defeat East Jay
East Jay Middle School’s eighth grade girls basketball team went without a field goal in overtime as it fell 25-24 to the visiting Delta Eagles. The seventh grade squad also lost, 19-13.
Deanna Chenoweth and Taylor Homan each scored nine points for the eighth grade Chiefs, who led 21-16 after three quarters before managing just three points the rest of the way. Audrey Shreve added five points.
Betsy Muhlenkamp totaled eight points for the EJMS seventh grade team, which was shut out in the third quarter. Katie Beougher and Taylor Muhlenkamp each had two points.


WJMS sixth wins
DUNKIRK — The West Jay sixth grade boys basketball team won its season opener Thursday 32-22 over West Side (Union City).
Gabe Faulkner racked up 18 points to lead the Eagles. Wyatt Geesaman also reached double figures with 12 points.
The WJMS B team fell 23-16 with Ian McCombs scoring eight points.

Six advance
DUNKIRK — Six competitors earned berths in the regional berths as they won their age groups recently at the Dunkirk Elks Hoop Shoot Competition.
Winning in the 8-9-year-old division were Quinn Faulkner and Taylor Lowe. Josh Greenburg and Kate Paxson were champions in the 10-11-year-old division, and Gabe Faulkner and Rhegan Shimp were the 12-13-year-old champions.
The winners advance to the regional competition on Jan. 20 at New Castle Fieldhouse.
