Patriot freshmen fall to Hoosier Heritage foes (11/21/06)

It was a tough night for the Patriot freshman basketball teams.

Jay County's freshman boys basketball team lost a heart-breaker in their season opener Monday, falling 34-33 to the Delta Eagles. The girls team fell behind 16-2 after the opening period and couldn't dig all the way out of the hole in a 32-26 loss to the Pendleton Heights Arabians.

The Patriot boys had a 25-19 lead heading into the final period, and were still up by three in the closing minute. But Delta's Kyle Smedley made a 3-pointer while being fouled in the process, then hit the ensuing free throw to give his Eagles a four-point play and the win.

Smedley finished with a game-high 19 points for Delta, and Tanner Wehlage added nine.

Brad Horn posted 15 points to pace Jay County. Jacob Chenoweth had seven points, and Josh Beaty and John Pettus each added four.

Shelby Gierhart scored nine points to lead the Patriot girls, who were still down by 14 points at halftime. They closed to within nine with a period to play, but just couldn't catch Pendleton Heights.

Brittany Muhlenkamp followed Gierhart with five points, and Jamie Klinger and Kaylee Davis each added four.

High Rollers fall

The Jay County High Rollers bowling teams lost their season openers Saturday, the boys by way of the tiebreaker after a 10-10 final and the girls 17-3 to Huntington North.

The boys rallied to tie after falling behind 8-2 in the first game, but lost the total pin tiebreaker 1,848-1,810. Andy Hughes had the high game of 232, and Tom McCowan rolled the top series at 407.

Desi Fuller paced the Jay County girls with the top game of 186 and series of 355.

In junior varsity action the High Roller boys lost 16-4 to Huntington North with Dustin Taylor rolling the high game (197) and series (373). The JV girls team fell 11-9 to Blackford with the high game (194) and series (342) turned in by Krysten Taylor.

Starfires finished third

DALEVILLE - The South Adams wrestling team finished 3-1 for a third-place finish Saturday at the Daleville Super Duals.

The Starfires defeated Northeastern 54-24, Indianapolis Manuel 54-24 and Indianapolis Howe 63-12. Their lone loss came by a 40-30 count to Noblesville.

Chase Sprunger (125), Dustin Ehr (152), Josh Kimberlin (189) and Stephen Hirschy (215) all finished perfect on the day and each scored three victories by pin fall. Mark Ferris (112), Colt Gentis (119) and Jim Marbach (130) also went undefeated.

Three Patriots perfect

A trio of Patriot junior varsity wrestlers finished with perfect records as they hosted the Jay County Junior Varsity Invitational Saturday.

Seth Drumm (125) and Aaron Miller (145) each posted 4-0 marks while Jake Lyons (125) went 3-0. Also with winning records were Jake Boyer (215) at 3-1, Tony McCowan (140) at 2-1, and Mason Murphy (135) and Jon Hawn (189) each at 3-2.[[In-content Ad]]
