Patriot girls edge Bulldogs (09/18/06)

JCHS soccer

CENTERVILLE - The Patriots let a 3-0 lead slip away. But they didn't let the victory go with it.

Jay County's girls soccer team scored in the final five minutes against the Centerville Bulldogs Saturday to save a 4-3 win.

For the second straight week it was double-header action for the Patriot soccer teams with the boys falling 2-1 to Centerville.

In the girls game, Jay County (4-3-1) built a 3-0 lead in the first half, only to have Centerville score three times in a 10-minute span of the second to even the score. But with 4:44 left in the contest, senior Sara Garringer passed up the middle to sophomore Brianne Wellman. Her shot was deflected by the Centerville goalie, but she knocked the rebound into the net for the game-winning goal.

"I thought the girls played very well in the first half and then relaxed just a little too much starting the second half of play," said JCHS coach Sue Rager. "I was proud of their efforts not to let the game end in a tie. They fought back and worked together for that final goal."

The Patriots built their first half lead starting with another Wellman rebound. Garringer passed to Wellman, and senior Caitlin Dunn followed the deflected shot for the opening score.

The just over three minutes to go in the first half Garringer took a indirect kick from the right side. Again Wellman was there for the pass, bouncing the ball off her knee for a 2-0 advantage.

Just one minute later Garringer sent in a high shot, which was deflected by the Bulldog goal keeper. Junior Dana Horn took advantage of yet another rebound to give Jay County it's three-goal halftime advantage.

Garringer's assists on the second and third goals extended her Patriot career record to 13.

Abby Loy finished with six saves, and Esther Stephen added a pair.

A hand ball in the box cost the game for the Jay County boys. The score was tied at one with 15 minutes left in the game when the Patriots were called for the foul, and Centerville took advantage the 2-1 final margin.

The only goal for Jay County (5-4) also came on a penalty kick by Scott Bruggeman just two minutes prior to the Bulldogs' game-winner.

Centerville scored it's first goal midway through the opening half.

Derek Mills finished with seven saves for the Patriots as both teams took seven shots on goal in the contest.
