Patriot girls place 7th at Blackford Invitational (09/15/03)

Jay County’s cross country teams had their work cut out for them Saturday as they ran at the Blackford Invitational.

The girls team finished seventh out of 15 teams with 182 points. Tenth-ranked DeKalb was first with a score of 31, and No. 18 Richmond placed second with 82 points.

The boys team finished at the bottom of an 18-team field with a score of 539.

Huntington North scored a big win, finishing seven points ahead of No. 18 Pendleton Heights with 62 points.

Alyssa Johnson had the best finish of any Patriot on the day. She placed eighth in 15:52, three seconds behind Megan Bevins of Yorktown.

Nicole VanSkyock was 15th overall in 16:11, and Jessica Mosier was 32nd in 16:55. Jill Roughia (61st) crossed the line in 18:16, and Vanessa Wilkins (70th) finished the varsity scoring in 18:39.

Lindsey Vesperry came in with a time of 19:02. Allison Fullenkamp, who has battled with VanSkyock for second on the team this year, did not run because of an illness.

The top boys placing came from Nathan McClung as he finished 101st in a time of 20:43.

The rest of the Jay County boys finished in a pack. Josh Hawn was 113th in 23:00, and Paul Imel, Josh Atkinson and Josh Selvey trailed behind him.

The Patriots will run in the Union City Invitational next week at 10 a.m.

FR freshman still unbeaten

It had a fight against Marion Local Saturday, but the Fort Recovery freshman volleyball team stayed perfect on the year with wins over the Flyers and the Covington Buccs.

The Indians (8-0) got by Marion Local 15-12, 11-15, 15-3, and defeated the Buccs 15-3, 15-8.

Abby Niekamp had a couple of nice matches for the Tribe.

She paced the team with 26 sets against the Flyers and added six points and four kills. She also had 22 sets and a kill against Covington.

Rachel Stahl added 15 points against Marion Local, and Lauren Wenning led the team with five kills. Holly Stein had seven points and four kills.

Shelby Knapke had seven digs, and Brittany Brackman followed with five.

Sam Staugler scored eight points in the win over the Buccs, and Stahl added seven. Jodi Tobe and Lauren Wenning matched Niekamp with one kill each, and Brackman had one dig.

Jags fall to New Castle

The Jay County Jaguars under-12 girls soccer team was close at halftime, but fell to an 8-3 defeat to New Castle Saturday.

After trailing 4-1, Pazia Speed and Jordan McMillan scored to pull within one goal at halftime. But, the Jaguars were shut out in the second half in the five-goal defeat.

Speed led the team with two scores on five shots on goal. Kayla Phillips had three shots on goal.

One win, one tie for Jay

Jay County’s under-14 soccer team played a double header at Centerville Saturday. They tied the host team 3-3 in the opening game, and defeated Hagerstown 4-2 in the second.

Brad Horn had a pair of goals in the opening game, one on a Patrick Johnson assist. Ben Brandt came through with the other off a Chase Ainsworth assist.

Johnson scored a trio of goals in the second game as Jay County won despite being outshot 30-15. Pazia Speed had the other score.

Derek Bartlett and Chase Ainsworth each recorded 10 saves.

Winter swim to start

The first practice for the Jay County Winter Swim Team will be Monday, Sept. 29 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Other practices during the first week of swimming will be Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. All practices will be at the Jay County High School Pool.

The team is open to swimmers of all ages, but those interested must have some swimming experience. Schedules and other information will be distributed at the first practice.
