Patriot girls roll over two

MONROE - With another sweep Thursday, the Jay County High School girls track team has hit its stride. The boys team is still looking for its first win.

Katie Simmons and Maria Murphy each picked up a pair of wins, leading the girls team to 100 points as it easily finished ahead of Bellmont (36) and host Adams Central (20).

The boys team, which got two wins from Tevan Nichols, scored 39 points to finish last. Bellmont eked out the victory 59-58 over Adams Central.

Simmons narrowly fought off teammate Leah Wellman for first place in the 1,600-meter run, winning by one second in 6 minutes, 1 second. She took the 3,200 run by more than 30 seconds in 12:55.

Murphy scored her third double win of the season with a dominant effort in the throwing events. She was first in the shot put by more than six feet with a toss of 33 feet, ¼ inch, and turned in a one-two effort with teammate Abby Denney in the discus with a winning throw of 102 feet, 5 inches.

Nichols was responsible for most of the Patriot boys team's points, taking first place in the 800 run in 2:11 and the 1,600 with a time of 4:55. He also teamed with Patrick Johnson, Brad Leuthold and Dylan Cope for a time of 9:03 to win the 4x800 relay.

The only other win for the JCHS boys came from Zach Cash in the 300 hurdles in 44.5.

Senior Kari Hemmelgarn completed the Patriot girls' sweep of the distance events by winning the 800 run in 2:43, and was also in on two of their three relay victories.

Hemmelgarn teamed with Liz Lennartz, Eme Miller and Wellman to take the 4x800 in 11:22 and joined Macey Gerber, Megan Taylor and Kim Braun for first in the 4x400 with a time of 4:42.

Jordan McMillan took the top spot in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 11 ¼ inches with teammate Kelsey Wood in second place. Wood finished off the field-event sweep with a winning leap of 5 feet in the high jump.

Taylor led yet another Jay County sweep in the 100 hurdles, finishing first in 19.11 ahead of Morgan Link and Braun.

Gerber took the 400 dash win in 1:08, one second in front of teammate Julie Valentine.

McMillan, Wood, Katie Snyder and Sierra Weatherhead turned in a time of 55.8 to take the 4x100 relay.[[In-content Ad]]
