Patriot girls suffer 1st loss

CONVERSE — The six-meet, season-opening win streak for the Jay County High School girls swim team came to an end Tuesday with a 103-83 loss to the host Oak Hill Golden Eagles. The boys team fell 132-53 to fall to 0-3.
Eme Miller won the 500 freestyle for the JCHS girls by more than 20 seconds in 5 minutes, 58.42 seconds, and was also the runner-up in the 200 freestyle. She teamed with freshmen Caitlin Mark, Brie McGhee and Alyson Lucas to win the 4x100 relay in 4:11.64.
Mary Hudson took the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.76 and finished second in the 50 freestyle. Charlotte Becot posted a time of 2:30.33 in the 200 individual medley to earn the only other victory for the Patriot girls, and McGhee was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
Neal Fennig earned the lone win for the JCHS boys, taking the top spot in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.84. He was second in the 100 butterfly.
Wiley Young, Trent Whitenack and Alex Sutton all added runner-up efforts.

Eagles defeat W-D
DUNKIRK — West Jay Middle School’s eighth grade boys basketball team defeated the host Wes-Del Warriors 36-24 Tuesday. The seventh grade team won 35-29.
Nat Brackman totaled 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Eagle eighth graders, who held Wes-Del scoreless in the third quarter. Dakota Pettus scored all of his 11 points in the second half and also had five assists.
Daniel Meranda finished with 12 points and nine rebounds to lead the WJMS seventh grade team (4-2). Kyler Carvel scored 11 points.

East Jay boys win
UNION CITY — The East Jay boys basketball teams each picked up three-point victories Tuesday over Union City, the eighth graders 30-27 and the seventh grade team 24-21.
Zach Pryor and Jalen Ryder each totaled eight points to lead the eighth graders (2-2). Justin Dirksen scored seven points.
Isaac Alfont put in 10 points for the seventh grade squad, which picked up its first win. Adam Dirksen totaled four points.

Hart leads Chiefs
MUNCIE — Gabby Hart scored more than half of the East Jay seventh grade girls basketball team’s points Monday in leading it to a 36-35 overtime victory over Muncie Wilson. The eighth graders also won, 43-13.
Hart racked up 21 points for the seventh graders, who led by six after three quarters but had to fight off Wilson for the win in OT. Abby Wendel and Cheyanne Loy each totaled four points.
Breanne McIntire and Malarie Houck each scored nine points to lead the eighth grade team. Catherine Dunn followed with eight points.

WJMS wins first
GASTON — The West Jay eighth grade girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season Monday, 26-16 over Wes-Del. The seventh graders lost 19-15.
Courtney Finnerty led the eighth grade Eagles (1-2) to the victory with eight points. Tyra Westlake chipped in five points.
Emilie Walter’s eight points paced the WJMS seventh graders (0-3). Serrena McCaffery added five points.

Hogg is top scorer
Seth Hogg turned in a dominant effort to lead all scorers on the first day of Boomer Basketball League action Saturday.
Hogg racked up 28 points to lead MainSource Bank to a 40-22 victory over J&P Plating in the kindergarten division. Grace Morgan and Elizabeth Reece each totaled 22 points in the first and second grade girls division, and Clay Schmitz had 22 points in the first and second grade boys division.
Taylor Homan’s 17 points led all scorers in the fifth and sixth grade girls division.
And in the third and fourth grade division, Kailee Denney led the girls with 16 points while Ryan Schlechty scored 16 for the boys.[[In-content Ad]]
