NEW CASTLE - The Jay County boys golf team posted a couple of scores in the 80s as it finished seventh at the New Castle Invitational with a score of 351.

Richmond, ranked 12th in the state, took an easy victory at 294. Connersville was second at 307.

Adam Gray and Johnathon Fennig powered the Patriots, each shooting 83 at Westwood Country Club. Fennig opened with a 40 on the front nine and shot 43 on the back, and Gray had a 39 on the front and a 44 on the back.

Gray Suman followed with a 92, and Justen Moser rounded out the team score with a 93. Chris Shannon finished at 102.

Starfire tennis falls

South Adams' girls tennis team suffered a 4-1 loss Saturday to the Blackhawk Christian Braves.

The No. 2 doubles pair of Tara Beitler and Taylor Miller scored the Starfires' only win, topping Amy Tuthne and Becca Howard 6-3, 6-4.

In the other doubles match Katie Welch and Kristi Lehman fell to Anna Guthne and Lydia Brauner 6-2, 6-4. Stacey Thorpe lost 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 to Laura Kampara at No. 1 singles, Amanda Sprunger fell 6-3, 6-3 to Carolin Gamer at No. 2 singles and Kristen Steiner dropped 6-4, 6-3 to Kara Sipe at No. 3 singles.

South Adams swept the junior varsity match, 4-0.

Pair set records

HUNTINGTON - A pair of Jay County athletes walked away with meet records as the Patriot boys track team finished third Saturday at the Huntington North Freshman/Sophomore Invitational.

JCHS scored 82 points at the eight team meet to finish behind Marion (125) and the host Vikings (119).

Sophomores Brandon Reynard and Dexter Shreve each set new meet records as they finished as double winners.

Reynard's record mark came in the 100-meter dash as he won by 0.22 seconds over Montez Carter of Marion in 11.28 seconds. Shreve's record came in the high jump, where he topped the field by 2 inches at a height of 6 feet, 3 inches.

Shreve also finished first in the long jump at 19 feet 101/2 inches, and Reynard won the 300 hurdles at 42.3.

Fort JV wins pair

Travis Hart had a huge day for the Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team, which closed its season with wins of 11-10 and 14-4 over the Spencerville Bearcats.

Hart racked up five hits, six runs and five RBIs in the two-game set to lead Fort Recovery, which closed at 3-14. Brady Kahlig had two hits in each game and added two runs and an RBI in game two.

Alex Gehle doubled, scored twice and drove in a run in the opener.

Jordan Hess scored four times in the second game, and Craig Tobe had two RBIs.

Kahlig earned the victory in game one as he struck out six batters, and Hess tossed 11/3 scoreless for the save. In the second game A.J. Backs earned the victory.

Two finish as runners-up

MUNCIE - A pair of area drivers were among the best at Muncie Dragway Saturday.

Rick Shreves of Dunkirk finished second in the Pro division, and Ridgeville's Eric Nunez was the runner up in the Super Sport division.[[In-content Ad]]
