The Eagles proved just as difficult to contend with as the blustery conditions.
With strong winds gusting  Tuesday, the Jay County High School boys golf team suffered a 172-189 loss Monday to the Delta Eagles at Portland Golf Club.
Evan Mathias had the lone birdie of the day for the Patriots on the par-5 14th at PGC. He added three pars for a team-best score of 44.
Delta’s Matt Fisher earned medalist honors with a 39.
Justen Keller followed Mathias with a 45, and Richie Carducci and Adam Alfont each finished at 50. Dylan Friddle shot 51.

Ooten leads netters
WINCHESTER — Jessica Ooten kept her perfect record intact Tuesday as the Jay County girls tennis team halted a three-match losing streak with a 3-2 win over the sectional rival Winchester Golden Falcons.
Ooten ran her record to 5-0, dominating the second set in a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Mylie Winger at No. 2 singles. Alyssa Rigby cruised through her first set at No. 1 singles and defeated Robin Goodhew 6-0, 6-3, and Miranda Reinhart won 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
The Patriots (2-3) dropped both doubles matches in three sets. Alicia Degler and Kyla McKibben fell 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) to Christie Casperson and Justice Peed at No. 1, and Mackenzie McIntire and Brittany Stevens lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 2.
JCHS won the junior varsity match 3-1 as it got 8-1 victories from Avery Loyd and the team of Morgan Kaufman and Jessica Kerrigan.

JC falls in extras
BLUFFTON — Jay County’s softball team lost Monday’s offensive showdown with the Bluffton Tigers 12-11 in eight innings.
Nikka Chaney took the loss for the Patriots, who scored seven times in the sixth inning but gave up five runs in the seventh as Bluffton (4-6) forced extra innings. She gave up eight runs — seven earned — on 13 hits and a walk in seven innings of relief.
Sara Bollenbacher paced the offense for JCHS (5-3), going 3-for-5 with a double and two runs. Chaney had three hits, two RBIs and a run, and Chelsea Tighe finished with a hit, three runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases.

Eagles, Chiefs split
DUNKIRK — The West Jay Middle School boys track team scored 46.5 points Monday to knock off visiting East Jay (43) and Monroe Central (36.5). EJMS won the girls competition with 78 points ahead of Monroe Central (27) and the host Eagles (18).
Daniel Meranda and Will Watson each won two events to lead the WJMS boys. Meranda was first in the 100-meter dash and 200 dash, and Watson scored wins in the shot put and discus.
Emi Minnich powered the East Jay girls with victories in the 800 run and 1,600 run.
Luke Weaver (1,600 run) and Nathan Heitkamp (long jump) earned the lone victories for the EJMS boys. Courtney Cox (400 run) and Lilly Rogers (discus) picked up second-place finishes for the West Jay girls.

Redkey wins tourney
The Redkey 8-and-younger all-star baseball team won the Tri-County All-Star Preseason Tournament Sunday with a 4-0 record.
Redkey defeated Yorktown 9-0, Wes-Del 7-4, Cowan 16-3 and Monroe Central 11-2 on the way to the title.
Quinn Faulkner led the effort, going 9-for-10 with a home run, two doubles and six runs. Carter Henry and Blake Bogenschutz each went 7-for-9.

Perod leads again
Giovanni Perod was the leading scorer for the second straight week in Jay Community Center’s Boomer Spring Soccer League.
Perod racked up seven goals to lead the first and second grade division, and Sean Bailey finished with five goals in the preschool and kindergarten division. Other division scoring leaders were Christian Marentes (four goals), Angel Perez and Zaaron Lee (three) and Joel Neff and Kayla Ferguson (two).
Austin Nally scored three touchdowns to earn top honors in the second through fourth grade division in the flag football league. Joshua Dowlen, Kadin Ridenour and Charlie Sauser each had two TDs in the preschool through first grade division.[[In-content Ad]]
