Patriot golfers pick up first victory (04/25/03)

Four season-best dual meet scores led the Jay County golf team to its first win of the season Thursday, 167-193 over the Bluffton Tigers.
Adam Foster broke through with his best number of the season to earn match medalist honors with a 40. He outdistanced teammates Tyler Johnston and Alex Hunt, both of whom hit the clubhouse with 41s.
Nathan McClung also came in with a season-best 45 to round out the varsity scoring, and Ben Freeman was one stroke back with a 46.
The Patriots also took the junior varsity match 197-215.
Josh Hall led the way with a 43, and Josh Thornburg was next with a 48. Brandon Michael had a 50, and James Brosher and Ronnie Reynolds each scored a 56.
Jay County’s next match is Saturday as it travels to the South Adams Invitational at 10 a.m.
Norwell blasts softball
The Norwell Knights shut down Jay County’s softball team with a no-hitter Thursday as they beat the Patriots 7-0.
Norwell (6-3) scored once in the first inning, four times in the second and twice in the fifth for the final margin. The Patriots couldn’t manage any offense, and committed four errors in the defeat.
Ashleigh Myers took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits in six innings while walking one.
Jay County (3-7) will play in double-header action at Marion Saturday at 9 a.m.
JV baseball tops Devils
Jay County and Richmond were matched in a 1-1 ball game before an offensive explosion by both teams in their final at bats.
The Patriots’ junior varsity baseball team (5-4) scored eight times in the bottom of the fifth inning. Richmond tried to make a run in the sixth, but only managed four runs as Jay County took the 9-5 win.
Phil Brown earned the victory, allowing five runs on six hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked two.
Eric Somers and Corey Locke each went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Brown, Korey Ellsworth, Nathan Miller, Mark Kelly and John Retter each had a hit and a run.

Paige Hummel knocked three hits for the Patriots in the defeat. Lisa Weitzel, Erica Murray, Jamie Walker, Vanessa Westlake and Miranda Betz each had one.[[In-content Ad]]
