Patriot golfers place second at invitational (04/18/05)

JCHS roundup

DECATUR — The Patriots showed just how exciting this year’s golf sectional tournament could be.

Jay County’s boys golf team finished just behind the No. 16 Norwell Knights at Saturday’s Bellmont Invitational at Grey Goose Golf Course with a 332. Norwell, the defending sectional champions, shot a 330, with the host Braves a distant third at 352.

Nathan McClung, Tyler Johnston and Alex Hunt came up huge for the Patriots, with McClung shooting a second-place 81. Johnston tied for third with an 82, and Hunt placed fifth with an 83.

Ben Freeman also finished in the top 10, completing the Jay County team scored with his 10th-place 86. Adam Foster followed with a 93.

Vormohr leads track

RICHMOND — Joseph Vormohr brought home the only championship for the Jay County boys track team Saturday as it finished third at the Richmond Invitational with 71 points. The host Red Devils were first with 143 points, and Blackford finished second with 137 at the seven-team event.

Vormohr earned the team’s lone win in the discus with a toss of 114 feet, five inches, outdistancing the field by nearly 15 feet. He was also second in the shot put at 46 feet, 10.5 inches.

Adding second-place efforts were Mark Kelly in the high jump and Justin Gilbert in the 100-meter dash. Gilbert was also third in the 200 dash, and he teamed with Adam May, Alex Michael and Sean Hatzell to place second in the 4x100 relay.

Baseball drops pair

CONNERSVILLE — The Jay County baseball team dropped to 2-5 Saturday, losing its first two Olympic Athletic Conference games to the Connersville Spartans 10-0 in five innings and 10-7. The Patriots never led in either contest.

Chad Keen and Josh Atkinson took the losses respectively. All of the Spartans’ runs in the first game were earned, but six of their 10 against Atkinson crossed the plate because of errors.

Trent Bailey paced the Patriot offense with two hits in each game. He scored twice in game two.

Casey Waters, Eric Somers and Kaleb Carpenter also added two hits apiece on the day.
