Patriot golfers take 1st

WINCHESTER — Evan Mathias has led the Jay County High School golf team all season.
Tuesday on the Pony course at Winchester Golf Club, it was Zach Fullenkamp’s turn to earn the top score.
The Patriot senior shot a 40, leading Jay County to a team score of 171 and a first place finish against the Union City Indians and Randolph Southern Rebels.
The Indians finished second with a 185, and the Rebels placed third with 222.
Fullenkamp bogeyed the first two holes, but recovered to shoot par on six of the final seven to finish at 4-over par. Mathias, who birdied the 148-yard, par-3 second, was one stroke behind Fullenkamp. He made par on the third, fifth, seventh and eighth holes before closing his round with a double bogey on the par-4 ninth.
Jay Houck made par on four holes, turning in a score of 43, and Austin Wendel finished with a 47.

MUNCIE — The Jay County High School boys golf team faced tough competition Saturday in the Muncie Central Invitational at The Players Club.
Evan Mathias shot a 3-over 75, leading the Patriots to a score of 353 and a 15th place finish.
Top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern won the 18-team invitational — which featured six of the top nine teams in the state — with a score of 299.
Zach Fullenkamp posted the No. 2 score for the Patriots with a round of 87.
Jay Houck shot a 94, and Austin Wendel rounded out Jay County’s score with a 97.
Amstutz qualifies
FORT WAYNE — For the first time since Haleigh Lehman in 2007, the South Adams girls track team will be represented at the state meet.
Starfire senior thrower Allie Amstutz qualified for the discus by placing third Tuesday at IHSAA regional at Fort Wayne Northrop.
Her career-best throw of 118 feet, 1 inch advances her to the state finals, which will be at 3 p.m. June 6 at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University.
Churubusco’s Katie Monk won the regional title with a throw of 151 feet, 2 inches.
Amstutz finished fourth in the shot put, with another career-best throw of 39 feet, 9 inches.
Only the top three places in each event advance to the state finals.
