Patriot golfers take pair (04/27/04)

Jay County Roundup

Jay County didn’t post its best number of the season, but the Patriot golf team did remain perfect in dual- and triangular-met action.

It finished ahead of the Monroe Central Golden Bears and the Winchester Golden Falcons Monday with a score of 169 at Monroe Central. The host Golden Bears were second with a 172, and Winchester was third with a 182.

Senior Jesse Shawver had the low score for Jay County for the second straight outing, shooting a 40. Shawver was the match medalist.

Adam Foster was next with a 41, and Alex Hunt came in with a 43. Ben Freeman finished the varsity scoring with a 45, Nathan McClung shot a 46 and Josh Thornburg came in at 49.

The Patriots will try to stay perfect when they host Adams Central Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. They will then visit Blackford Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Eagle girls top HC

The West Jay girls track team got great balance Monday, improving to 3-0 on the season with a 55-45 victory over Hartford City. Chris Moore contributed three more wins for the boys team, but the Eagles still dropped a 54-46 decision.

Five different girls picked up wins for the girls team, with Kayla Clevenger, Brittney O’Dell and Crystal Hutchens also contributing to a relay win.

Clevenger was first in the 100-meter dash while O’Dell picked up the win in the 200-meter dash. Hutchens earned a victory in the long jump.

The trio also teamed with Jennifer Buckland to take the 4x100-meter relay.

Also earning victories were Kelci Reed in the 1,600-meter run and Lindsey Current in the long jump.

Moore, who won four events in each of West Jay’s previous two meets, was first in the 400-meter dash for the boys team in 1-minute, one second. He also took the 1,600-meter run in 5:09 and the long jump at 15 feet, nine inches.

Baxter Holdcroft had the only other individual win for the boys team, taking the discus at 100 feet, three inches.

Sean Hatzel, Shay White, Blake Price and Alan Brown teamed to take the 4x100-meter relay in 55.1.

Klatt finishes eighth

A Jay County native participated in The Little 500 cycling race sponsored by the Indiana University Student Foundation last week in Bloomington.

Danae Klatt, a 2000 Jay County High School graduate, competed in the cycling relay with Wright Cycledelics teammates Trish Thomas, Leah French and Laura Horvath. The Cycledelics qualified as the 17th seed in the 32-team women’s field, but finished eighth in Friday’s feature event.

There were also a variety of events prior to the Little 500, with the Cycledelics placing 12th in the overall series. Klatt finished 46th in the individual time trials with a time of 2:53.61, 22 seconds off the winning pace.[[In-content Ad]]
