Patriot golfers third at Invite (05/02/05)

Local roundup

WINCHESTER — Only the best teams in the state were able to outgun Jay County Saturday.

The Patriot golf team placed third at the Winchester Invitational, shooting a 318 at Winchester Golf Club. The No. 1 Richmond Red Devils were first at 300, ninth-ranked Park Tudor took second at 312 and Vincennes Lincoln was a distant fourth at 336.

Tyler Johnston and Alex Hunt lived up to their top two spots in the Patriot lineup as they shared the fifth-place finish. Johnston had a birdie on the 458-yard, par-5 sixth hole en route to a 78, and Hunt matched that score with his one birdie coming on the 353-yard, par-4 fourth.

Nathan McClung went without a birdie, but racked up 11 pars for a 79. Ben Freeman, who eagled the 458-yard, par-5 12th, and Adam Foster each shot 83.

St. Myers 2nd at DeKalb

WATERLOO — Erin St. Myers had just six singles matches under her belt, but she played like a seasoned veteran.

The senior extended her winning streak at No. 2 singles to seven matches before falling in the championship match at the DeKalb Invitational Saturday. Her effort paced the Jay County girls tennis team to a fourth-place finish with 13 points at the eight-team event.

St. Myers, who played doubles for each of her first three seasons and the beginning of this year, stormed through her first two matches. She smashed Bluffton’s Jen Uggen 6-1, 6-0 in the opener and rolled over Sara Werling of Bellmont 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals.

She lost the championship match to Rachelle Grogg of the host Barons 6-2, 6-1, but is now 7-2 in her singles career.

Jay County’s next best efforts came from its No. 1s as Whitney Schemenaur and the team of Brianne Morrical and Chelsea Reff each won in opening-round action before dropping the next two matches to place fourth.

Amanda Lowe took her first loss of the season as she gave up six runs — four earned — on five hits in game two.

Amber Detro went 2-for-3 and drove in a run, and Lowe doubled and scored once.

FR JV softball falls

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery junior varsity softball team could not sustain its early surge Friday night as it fell 13-9 to the Russia Raiders.

Beth May suffered the loss, allowing 10 runs — five earned — in five innings of work.

Jodi Tobe had a great game at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a double in the defeat. She scored three runs, stole three bases and had an RBI.
