Patriot golfers top Union

Jay County roundup

Hoping to build momentum on their home course, the Patriots picked up their first win Tuesday.
Jay County High School’s girls golf team, which is in the midst of playing its only four home matches in a span of nine days, dominated play for a 214-266 victory over the visiting Union Rockets.
Alysia Fennig, a Patriot junior, was the only player to shoot in the 40s at Portland Golf Club. She had bogeys on the first, third, seventh and eighth holes on the way to earning medalist honors with a 49.
Jessica Luttrell led Union with a 55.
Brittany Stevens turned in a par for JCHS (1-1) on the 284-yard, par-4 third hole as she followed Fennig with a 52. Katlin Petro added a 54 while recoding a par on the 401-yard, par-5 sixth hole.
Whitney Gray completed the team score with a 59, and Cortney Myers shot 63.

MUNCIE — Jay County let a two-goal lead slip away Tuesday, settling for a 3-3 tie with the Muncie Central Bearcats in its season opener.
After Alex Dunn and Alex Abbott gave the Patriots (0-1) a 3-1 lead at the half, Fabian House brought Central back in the battle of new sectional rivals. He pulled the Bearcats to within one midway through the second half, and then netted the game-tying goal with just a minute remaining in the game.
House also scored Central’s first goal just seven minutes into the game.
Alex Dunn responded to the early score with consecutive goals — the first came on a penalty kick — for the Patriots, and Abbott, a freshman, added a score off of a Zach Fullenkamp assist to build the two-goal lead.
Jay County and the Bearcats will compete in the same sectional for the first time this season, joining Yorktown, Delta and Muncie Southside in Class 2A Sectional 15.

MARION — Their season-opening trip to Marion was Exhibit A of why the Patriots are happy to no longer have to deal with Marion in sectional play.
Jay County, which has visited the Grant County school for tournament play for more than 30 years, lost every match against the Giants in shutout fashion in a 5-0 defeat.
This season the Patriots will be the host for Sectional 64, which also includes Northeastern, Winchester, Randolph Southern and Union City.
On Tuesday, Derek Smith, Brad Leuthold and Nick Leuthold suffered defeats to Brandon Dubuque, Vinai Oddiraju and Korbett O’Banion at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles respectively. At No. 1 doubles Chance Fuller and Morton Garringer lost to Daniel Harrold and Advaith Srikanth, and in the No. 2 doubles match Matt Shrack and Tony Schwieterman fell to Deray Boyd and Tejas Srikanth.[[In-content Ad]]
