Patriot golfers win first dual
Jay County roundup
FARMLAND — Drew Houck and Justen Keller paced the Jay County High School boys golf team Thursday as it picked up a 182-199 victory over the host Wapahani Raiders at Hickory Hills Golf Club in its first dual match of the season.
Houck and Keller each parred the 485-yard, par-5 opening hole, and Houck went on to add three more pars in his round of 41. Keller was just one stroke behind him as he tallied three pars for a 42.
L.T. Beaty paced Wapahani with a 43.
Mitchel Rigby added a 49 for JCHS, and Austin Mann rounded out the team score with a 50.
Adam Alfont scored a 55 for the Patriots as they dropped the junior varsity match 212-256.
Baseball blanked
The Patriots managed just a single hit as they fell 12-0 in five innings Thursday to the visiting Wapahani Raiders, who are ranked third in Class 2A.
Andy Haffner suffered the loss for Jay County, giving up 12 runs — six earned — on 10 hits and six walks in 4 2/3 innings. Six of those runs came in the fifth inning.
Alex Dunn had the lone hit for the Patriots, who are now 2-2.
Tigers tops tennis
BLUFFTON — The Bluffton Tigers swept the singles matches from Jay County Thursday as they handed the Patriots a 4-1 defeat.
Ashley Caupp and Danielle Chenoweth earned the lone win for Jay County (0-3), knocking off Annessa Reiff and Allison Williams 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Alicia Degler and Kyla McKibben played a close match at No. 2 doubles but fell 6-2, 6-7 (9-11), 6-4 to Hannah Gilliam and Gina Eisenhut.
In singles action, Rachel Ray dropped the No. 3 match 6-2, 6-3 to Amanda Stone, Emily Huntsman fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 to Kara Fiechter and Jessica Ooten lost at No. 2 6-1, 6-0 to Megan Evans.
The teams split the 10 junior varsity matches, with JCHS wins coming from Cindy Hein, Avery Loyd, Brooke Fraley, and the teams of Mackenzie Overholser and Katey Michael, and Kennedi Craw and Sydney Bost.
JV baseball cruises
PARKER CITY — Welsey Hibbard helped power Jay County to a 17-0, five-inning victory over the host Monroe Central Golden Bears.
Hibbard smacked a double and a triple and scored three runs for the Patriots. Blake Baughman and Jon Lowe each added two doubles and three runs.
Jason Houston had two hits, two RBIs and a run, and Taylor Fugiett doubled and scored three times.
Houston also earned the victory as he walked one batter in four innings of hitless baseball. Chaz Carroll tossed the final inning to finish off the no-hitter.[[In-content Ad]]
