Patriot gymnasts open with victory (12/15/05)
Local roundup
MONROEVILLE — Even without its leader Jay County’s gymnastics team had more than enough to top the Heritage Patriots.
Jay County competed without 2004-05 balance beam state runner-up Hannah Williams, who suffered an injury earlier in the week. Still, junior Lacey Thornburg took first place in three out of four events to help push the visiting team to an 82.15-58.85 victory in its season opener.
Thornburg had the top all-around score of 28.8, with JCHS sophomore Erika Hunt right behind at 28.7. Thornburg won the uneven parallel bars with an 8.05, and was first on the balance beam (7.0) and the floor exercise (6.7).
Hunt completed the Jay County sweep as she won the vault with an 8.3. She finished second in each of the other three events.
Kendra Homan took first place on the bars and vault to lead the JV squad.

MUNCIE — The Patriot girls came so close, but fell just short in a 95-90 defeat to the Delta Eagle swimmers Monday. The Jay County boys team fell 116-68.
Cori Vormohr accounted for two of the girls team’s three individual wins as it nearly bounced all the way back after losing by 59 to the Eagles last season. She was first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2-minutes, 23.62 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 1:05.34.
April Acker led a Patriot sweep in diving with 154.40 points. Brittany Lewis was second, and Tricia Skiver placed third.
Vormohr, Lindsey Vesperry, Amber Kelly and Briann Saxman also finished first in 4:30.85 as Jay County captured the top two spots in the 400 freestyle relay.
Steven Kelly had the only victory for the boys team, leading a diving sweep in front of Todd McCowan and Donny McCowan with a score of 150.85.[[In-content Ad]]
