Patriot gymnasts win season opener

MONROEVILLE - Jay County High School's gymnastics team opened its season with a win Thursday, defeating the host Heritage Patriots 94.9-87.6.

Katie Snyder, a freshman, was the only JCHS athlete to place in the top three in every event as she won the all-around competition with a score of 31.4 points. She took first place on the vault with an 8.85, was second on the uneven bars at 6.7 and added third-place scores of 7.5 and 8.05 on the balance beam and floor exercise respectively.

Junior Kristen Ainsworth won a pair of events and finished just five hundredths of a point behind Snyder in the all-around. Her victories came with scores of 8.25 on the floor and 7.65 on the bars.

Nadlie Runyon, a senior, made it a Jay County sweep with her victory on the beam. Coming off of her sixth-place finish at the state meet on the event last season, she posted a winning score of 8.95.

Runyon was also second on the floor with an 8.2 for JCHS, which started last season with a team score of 96. Lexie Rowles was third on the vault with an 8.3.

In the junior varsity competition, Rowles won the bars (5.1) and beam (7.1) and Lyndee Evans finished first on the vault (8.15) and floor (7.3).

WJ blasts Montpelier

DUNKIRK - The West Jay Middle School seventh grade boys basketball team ran its record to 7-1 Thursday with a 43-17 win over Montpelier.

Nate Brackman led the Eagles with 25 points. Grant Alsip added 10 points, and James Williams grabbed six rebounds.

Chiefs sweep SW

East Jay's girls basketball teams each defeated Southern Wells Thursday, the eighth graders by a 23-20 final and the seventh grade team 26-15.

Malarie Houck, Catherine Dunn and Breanne McIntire each scored seven points as the seventh grade squad pushed its record to 7-0. Chloe Steigerwalt added four points.

Katlin Petro had nine points for the eighth grade Chiefs (6-1), who were up 13-3 at halftime but trailed by one heading into the fourth quarter. Abbi Dunlavy scored five points.

Eagle girls split

WINCHESTER - Tyra Westlake was the lone West Jay player in double figures as she led the seventh grade girls basketball team to a 29-21 win over host Driver. The Eagle eighth graders lost 39-19.

Westlake totaled 10 points as the WJMS seventh graders improved to 2-3. Courtney Finnerty added nine points.

Cierra Barcus finished with eight points and five rebounds as the eighth grade Eagles (4-1) suffered their first loss. Betsy Huffman followed with six points.

EJMS boys roll

PONETO - The East Jay eighth grade boys basketball team limited host Southern Wells to seven first-half points Thursday on the way to a 62-31 victory. The seventh grade team lost 44-43 in triple overtime.

Jacob Schlosser scored 16 points for the Chief eighth graders, who led by 29 at the half. Zane Shreve scored 14 points, and Zach Fullenkamp also reached double figures with 10.

Zach Pryor finished with 14 points for the EJMS seventh grade team, which led 18-10 at halftime. Jalen Ryder, who hit a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to force the first overtime, added 10 points.[[In-content Ad]]
