Patriot netters climb above .500

UNION CITY — For the first time since the opening week of the season, the Patriots are above .500.
Jay County High School’s girls tennis team cruised to its third straight 5-0 win Tuesday as it topped the Union City Indians.
No. 1 singles player Alyssa Rigby paced the Patriots (5-4), whose previous two wins had come in shutout fashion over Muncie Southside and South Adams. She topped Ashley Mink 6-1, 6-0.
Jessica Ooten improved to 8-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ashley Kismiller at No. 2 singles, and Miranda Reinhart rallied past Alison Hunt 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. In the No. 1 doubles match Alicia Degler and Kyla McKibben rolled over Alexandra Anderson 6-2, 6-1, and at No. 2 doubles Brittany Stevens and Mackenzie McIntire defeated Sandra Banda and Emily Smith 6-3, 6-3.
Jay County got four shutout wins as it took the junior varsity match 6-0.

Baseball edges Indians
Jay County tallied the game-winning run in its final at bat as it knocked off the visiting Union City Indians 3-2.
The Patriots (8-4-1) grabbed the lead with two runs in the second inning. Union City scored once in the top of the fourth and once in the seventh to pull even before JCHS eked out the win.
Kyle Selvey earned the victory as he held the Indians to two runs — one earned — while striking out five batters and walking none. He gave up five hits in seven innings to improve to 2-0.
Keenan James and Chance Fuller each had a hit and a run, and Selvey added a hit and an RBI.

Giants top softball
MARION — The Patriots rallied late before falling 5-4 to the Marion Giants.
Jay County (8-6) trailed  4-1 through five innings before scoring twice in the top of the sixth inning and once in the seventh to tie the game. The Giants responded with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Rachelle Jackson suffered the loss as she allowed five runs on nine hits and five walks. She struck out eight batters.
Katie Aker finished 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs, and Catherine Dunn added two hits, including a double, and a run. Courtney Finnerty had a hit, a run and an RBI.

Burelison, Dowlen lead
Josh Dowlen and Brooks Burelison were the leading players Saturday in the Jay Community Center’s Boomer Spring Flag Football league.
Dowlen scored three touchdowns in the preschool through first grade division, and Burelison had a trio of TDs in the second through fourth grade division.
In Boomer Soccer, Sean Bailey and Brenden Runyon each tailed four goals to lead the preschool/kindergarten division.
Chip Wendel, Lillian Rogers and Levi Moyer each tallied three goals in the seventh/eighth grade division, Zaaron Lee had three in the fifth/sixth grade division and Luke Haggard scored three in the third/fourth grade division.[[In-content Ad]]
