Patriot netters fall to Highland (09/03/04)

Jay County Roundup

ANDERSON — Jay County’s No. 1s took a little longer than usual, but they still got the job done. It wasn’t quite enough.

The Patriot boys tennis team got victories from Kurtis Hess and the team of Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby, but couldn’t find a third point in a 3-2 loss to the Anderson Highland Scots Thursday.

Evans and Rigby looked to be headed toward a big win, but they had trouble keeping the ball in play in the second set as Zach McCurdy and Rohen Patel forced a third. However, the Patriot pair bounced back in the deciding set to put away a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory.

Kurtis Hess dropped a difficult first set at No. 1 singles 7-6 (7-5) before roaring back. He came up with a second-set win and then rolled in the third for a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-1 win over Reggie McCurdy.

Evans and Rigby and Hess are 9-1 on the year.

With losses by Jeff Sims 6-1, 6-2 to Eric Ray at No. 2 singles and Joshua Ludy 6-2, 6-0 to Anthony Duquaine at No. 3 singles, the Patriots (3-4, 1-2 Olympic Athletic Conference) left yet another match to be decided at No. 2 doubles.

Adam Arnold and Travis Smith (6-4) put forth another great effort, but couldn’t quite come up with the big points. They dropped by a 7-5, 6-4 score to Jack Shaw and Brad Roundtree.

Jay County also lost all three junior varsity matches against the Scots.

James Heare fell to Brandon Selig at No. 1 singles 8-4, Thomas Shrack lost his No. 2 singles match 8-2 to Mitchell Phillips and Jared Shrack took an 8-3 defeat at the hands of Adam Blankenship.

The Patriots will return home from their three-match OAC road trip to play the South Adams Starfires Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

EJ teams fourth

OSSIAN — The East Jay cross country teams each finished fourth as they competed in the 11-team Norwell Invitational Thursday.

Kylie Wellman recorded the top effort for the Chiefs, placing fourth in the girls race in 13:03. Kyle Simmons was the top runner for the boys as he took ninth in 11:55.

Following Wellman were Cassie Laux in 16th, Leah Wellman in 21st, Katie Butcher in 26th and Joni Degler in 36th.

Patrick Johnson came in behind Simmons in 12th place. Isaac Poole was 22nd, Joey Franks placed 27th and Jordan Moser took 29th.

WJ 7th ties, eight falls

West Jay’s seventh grade football team opened the season with a 6-6 tie against Winchester Driver Thursday. The eighth graders dropped a 12-6 decision to Driver.

Driver led the seventh grade game with a touchdown early in the third quarter, but the Eagles didn’t take long to respond. Josh Beaty tied the game with an 18-yard, third-quarter touchdown run.

The West Jay eighth graders got their lone touchdown on the opening kickoff as Andrew Lancaster returned it all the way for a touchdown. Driver took the win with scores in the second and third quarters.

Credited with big defensive efforts were seventh graders Dustin and Dillon Easton and eighth graders Alex Morton and Allen Brown.

Jay pair places 3rd

Rosanne Knipp and Cindy Denney earned a bronze medal for placing third as the Jay County Special Olympics golf teams competed in the Indiana State Golf tournament last month. Ron and Larry Smith finished in fourth place.[[In-content Ad]]
