Patriot netters knock off MC

The Jay County High School girls tennis team picked up another victory Tuesday, knocking off the visiting Muncie Central Bearcats 3-2.

Mariah Clark led the Patriots as she cruised to victory at No. 1 singles. She took a 4-1 lead in the opening set and then won the first three games of the second as she topped Abbie Allardt 6-2, 6-3.

Kayla Martin fell behind 2-1 at No. 2 singles before rallying back to take the first set. She took four of the first five games of the second and topped Emily Green 6-4, 6-3.

And at No. 1 doubles, Becky Muhlenkamp and Emily Huntsman won the final three games of the opening set as they earned a 6-2, 6-3 win.

Ashley Caupp and Danielle Chenoweth fought for a first-set victory in a tiebreaker, but dropped the next two in a 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-1 loss to Taylor Rabel and Zoe Bilello. In the No. 3 singles match Alyssa Rigby lost 7-5, 6-1.

Jay County dropped the junior varsity match 10-1 with the lone victory coming from the doubles team of Melinda Penrod and Kyla McKibben.

Girls track is 2nd

PENDLETON HEIGHTS - The Patriot girls track team finished second in a four-team meet Tuesday, winning three events as it scored 71.5 points.

Pendleton Heights won the meet with 105 points, with New Castle (47.5) third and Muncie Southside (18) fourth.

Maria Murphy continued her perfect run in the shot put for Jay County, outdistancing the field with a toss of 34 feet, 11 inches. She was also the discus runner-up at 99 feet, 4 inches.

Katie Simmons led a one-two Patriot finish in the 1,600-meter run with a winning time of 5:49, and Leah Wellman was second in 5:56. Jordan McMillan and Kelsey Wood each cleared the high jump bar at 4 feet, 10 inches, finishing first and second respectively, and McMillan was the long jump runner-up at 15 feet, 3 ¼ inches.

JV softball falls

HUNTINGTON - Jay County could not slow down the Huntington North Vikings in a 22-1, five-inning loss.

Abbey Vance suffered the defeat as Huntington North posted six runs in the first inning and 11 in the third. Seven of the runs against her, on six hits and five walks, were earned.

Kelsey Sell had the only hit for the Patriots with an RBI double in the second inning to score Krista Taylor.

WJMS girls perfect

DUNKIRK - Ciera Barcus and Miranda Gerber each won a pair of events Tuesday as the West Jay Middle School girls track team improved to 7-0 with an 82-18 slaughter of visiting Salamonie. The boys team picked up a 54-46 win.

Barcus took the long jump at 14 feet, 6 ¼ inches, and was also first in the high jump at 4 feet, six inches. Gerber took care of the sprints for the Eagles, winning the 100 dash in 13.9 seconds and the 200 dash in 30.5.

Andrew Eley took first place in the shot put for the boys team, and Dan Walter won the long jump. Eley and Walter also contributed to wins in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Other victories for the girls team came from Cierra Nichols (hurdles), Emily Walker (800 run), Tyra Westlake (shot put) and Breea Holdcroft (discus). Adding wins for the boys were Dustin Smith (110 hurdles), Nate Brackman (400 dash) and Arthur Lamb (discus).[[In-content Ad]]
