Patriot runners just short again (10/17/05)
JCHS cross country

DECATUR — This season’s regional meet was just about an instant replay of last year’s for the Jay County girls cross country team.
After finishing second in the 2004 sectional the Patriots overtook their sectional rivals in regional action only to finish short of a semi-state berth behind five Fort Wayne teams. The same was true Saturday as they were sixth out of 10 teams with 174 points.
“I’m sure they’re a little disappointed,” said first-year JCHS coach Les Bantz. “... I know they wanted to move on, and I wanted to.”
The top five teams — No. 10 Fort Wayne Snider (45), No. 12 Fort Wayne Concordia (51), Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger (79), Homestead (131) and Fort Wayne North Side (140) — earned trips to the New Haven semi-state as did the top 15 individuals. Two-time defending Bellmont sectional champion Wendy Mahlan of the host Squaws took the regional title with a time of 14-minutes, 48 seconds.
No. 12 Fort Wayne Northrop (47) won the boys title in front of 11th-ranked Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger (56).
Senior Alyssa Johnson paced Jay County, although she fell short of an individual semi-state berth for the first time in her career. She stayed with the lead pack early, but was 18th after a mile and slipped back to finish 20th in 16:01.
Johnson, who placed 13th in the regional last season, was a state qualifier in her freshman and sophomore seasons. She was also the individual sectional champion in each of those years before giving way to Mahlan in each of the last two. She led the Patriots to their first and only sectional title in 2003 and a team semi-state berth that season.
Haleigh Lehman of South Adams, who finished 14th behind Johnson in 2004, slipped all the way to 37th Saturday with a time of 16:55.
Sophomore Amanda Johnson was second for Jay County and 30th overall in 16:31.
Freshman Kylie Wellman was the only Patriot to come close to her sectional pace, finishing 37th in 16:51. She was just four seconds slower than in Tuesday’s race while the rest of the Jay County top five were an average of 14.5 seconds slower.
Jessica Mosier completed the race in 17:21 to finish 47th, and Cassie Laux capped the team score in 66th in 18:35.
“Everybody was slower today than they were Tuesday,” said Bantz. “I don’t know whether it was the morning race, I really don’t know.”[[In-content Ad]]
