Patriot spikers put an end to long home skid (09/24/04)

JC/SA volleyball roundup

PORTLAND — This result has been a long time coming.

Jay County’s volleyball team had not won a match at home in ages, losing four straight in front of its home fans following an Aug. 31 victory over Fort Wayne South Side. The drought finally ended Thursday as the Patriots rallied for a 25-23, 21-25, 18-25, 25-13, 15-13 victory over the Wes-Del Warriors.

“We just played with confidence because we started playing well ...” said Jay County coach Fred Medler. “We’re real pleased. They’re real pleased, and they’re relieved. The frustration is over. Sometimes that’s what it takes — one good match.”

The Patriots (7-16) played well in the first game to win it, but then had to remove Kelly Sautbine from the lineup because of a foot problem and struggled for the next two games.

However, they came alive in the fourth game behind Erin St. Myers, who then gave them all the lead they would need in the fifth.

She served Jay County to a 5-0 run for a 6-2 lead, tossing a pair of aces into the mix. The advantage jumped to 11-5 before Wes-Del called its second time out.

The Patriots then pushed ahead by a 14-9 score, but Danielle Hiatt brought Wes-Del back. She served three straight points, the first on a Lacey Ault kill and the second on a Kasi Townsend block.

The Warriors got a chance to tie the match after Hiatt’s third serve was headed long, but glanced off Jamie Walker’s shoulder for an ace to cut the deficit to 14-13. But the match ended on the next point when Hiatt’s serve went wide left.

Medler said the most important thing for Jay County was not allowing its mistakes to turn into long runs for Wes-Del.

“This is the team we’ve been capable of being all year long,” he said.

St. Myers paced Jay County with 12 kills and 25 digs. She also scored eight points.

Erica Clark finished with 20 assists, nine points and two blocks, and Janae Roush had 10 points and 13 digs.

Shannon O’Dell and Jamie Walker each had nine kills, and Ashley Overla added eight kills and two blocks. Leah Gasparovic had 21 assists and 12 digs, and Theresa Reinhart added 11 digs.

Jay County dropped the junior varsity match, 25-10, 25-17.

Maria Miller paced the Patriots with nine digs, three points and three kills, all team highs. Sharon Dirksen had four assists, Shelby Rines had two kills and Mary Spencer notched six digs.

Jay County now has more than a week off before playing in the Olympic Athletic Conference tournament Saturday, Oct. 2.

Falcons top SA spikers

BERNE — South Adams played its first match in the Star Dome in two weeks, but couldn’t give the home fans much to cheer about. A night after topping Jay County in a five-game marathon, the Starfires (3-13) dropped a 25-17, 25-20, 25-14 decision to the Winchester Golden Falcons Thursday.

Alyssa Miller posted 10 assists and four digs in the defeat. Renee Neuenschwander had six kills, and Robyn Habegger followed with five kills.

Lacy Rhoades finished with six digs, and Brooke Fox had two digs. Tamara Moser notched four blocks, and Kara Ross had three blocks.

South Adams dropped a tight first game, but rallied to win in junior varsity action 25-27, 25-23, 25-13.

The Starfires will play in the Homestead Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m.[[In-content Ad]]
