Patriot spikers take 2 at Heritage (08/27/07)

MONROEVILLE - The pace has picked up.

With a 2-1 record at Saturday's Heritage Invitational, the Jay County volleyball team is already halfway to matching its 2006 win total. The team defeated Canterbury 25-20, 25-18 and New Haven 25-22, 25-15 and took their only defeat against the host Patriots 25-22, 25-22.

JCHS finished the 2006 season 14-21, and did not win its seventh match a year ago until Sept. 9.

Senior Shelby Rines paced Jay County in both of its victories, racking up 16 digs and five kills against Canterbury.

She also had nine digs and seven kills in the win over New Haven.

Rines added 11 digs and five kills in the loss to Heritage, which reached the 2006 state final four in Class 2A, giving her totals of 36 digs and 17 kills for the weekend.

Sarah Mescher had 17 points, including a team-best six aces, and 16 kills for the Patriots, who are now 7-3. Sharon Dirksen totaled 53 assists and 11 points, and Sarah Westgerdes had 13 kills and five blocks.

Chelsea Grady picked up 28 digs, and Stephanie Wellman scored 12 points.

Tribe JV victorious

FORT RECOVERY - Michael Gaerke's pair of touchdowns led the Fort Recovery junior varsity football team to a 13-6 victory over the Ansonia Tigers.

Gaerke gave the Indians the lead in the first quarter when he found Nathan Keller on a 13-yard touchdown pass. Ansonia pulled to within one with their lone touchdown in the second quarter, but Gaerke ran in a 15-yard touchdown in the third quarter for the final margin.

Dunkirk resident wins

ALBANY - Rick Shreves of Dunkirk took first place Saturday night in the Super Sport division at Muncie Dragway. He drove his 1969 Chevy Nova to victory ahead of Gary Blankenship of Muncie.[[In-content Ad]]
