Patriot swimmers 6th at relays (12/06/04)

INDIANAPOLIS — The Jay County swim teams proved to be overmatched at the Lawrence North Relays Saturday as both the boys and girls finished sixth in the six-team event.

The Patriot girls scored 107 points, 13 behind fifth place Decatur Central. The host Wildcats won with 167 points.

Jay County’s boys scored 91 points, finishing behind Decatur Central’s 122. Brownsburg took first with 171 points.

The top Patriot finish on the day was fourth place, which was accomplished by the boys in four events and the girls in one.

Placing fourth for the boys were:

— the 200-yard medley team of Matthew Peterson, Joseph Vormohr, Derick Lee and Josh Hawn in 1-minute, 58.55 seconds.

— the 100-yard freestyle team of Matthias Scherer, Nick Ehrhart, Josh Shatto and Hawn in 55.19.

— the 200-yard backstroke team of Lee, Shatto and Peterson in 2:18.59.

— the 400-yard freestyle team of Lee, Hawn, Vormohr and Peterson in 3:57.33.

The diving duo of Brittany Lewis and Lacey VanSkyock posted the only fourth-place finish for the girls team.

Jay teams split

Jay County’s junior high boys basketball teams split with Blackford County’s as part of the inaugural cross county line challenge Saturday.

East Jay’s eighth grade team topped Hartford City 60-24, but the seventh grade team fell by a 51-44 count in overtime. The West Jay seventh graders earned a 47-27 win over Montpelier, but the eighth grade team fell to a 43-22 defeat.

The winning Jay County teams were dominant, with the Chief eighth graders (3-0) getting two players in double figures while the Eagle seventh grade (5-0) used a more balanced attack.

Lance Franklin set the pace with 15 points, and Dexter Shreve followed with 10 points. Phillip Powell scored eight points.

Taylor Farmer led the West Jay seventh graders with 10 points. John Pettus, Willie Mayfield and Michael Daniels each added nine.

Eric Homan had 21 points and Ben Vance added 11 in the loss for the East Jay seventh grade (1-2). The West Jay eighth grade team (2-3) got seven points from Ty Fullenkamp.

Tankers take 3rd

The Jay County Winter Swim Team placed third at the Christmas Card Invite in Muncie this weekend with 2,515 points. Muncie finished first with 2,989 points, and Yorktown was second with 2,711.

Five Jay County swimmers — Cori Vormohr, Justin Klopp, Sam Miller, Wiley Young and Levi Hummel — qualified for state competition with their efforts.

Vormohr paced the Jay County girls swimmers, who finished first overall, as she won all of her 12 events. She posted a pair of personal-best times, including a new team record in the 13-and-older girls 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1-minute, 13.15 seconds.

Klopp was first in seven 13-and-older boys events, totaling seven personal-best times at the meet. Sam Miller, Wiley Young and Levi Hummel each added one victory.[[In-content Ad]]
