Patriot swimmers top Knights

OSSIAN — The Jay County High School girls swim team won 11 of 12 events Thursday, swimming to a 111-69 victory over the Norwell Knights.
The Patriot boys fell to the Knights 104-75.
Katy Smeltzer and Anne Vormohr were both dual event winners for the Patriot girls, who improve to 7-0 on the season.
Vormohr won the 50 yard freestyle (23.49 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (one minute, 03.27 seconds), and Smeltzer placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:10.43) and 500 freestyle (6:01.54).
Ashley Mark (200 freestyle), Jamie Valentine (100 breaststroke) and Sophie Bader (200 individual medley) also earned victories for Jay County.
Vormohr, Bader and Smeltzer teamed up with Caitlin Mark to win the 200 medley relay. Sisters Caitlin and Ashley Mark joined cousins Vormohr and Bader to place first in the 200 freestyle relay, and Bader, Ashley Mark and Smeltzer teamed up with Alyson Lucas to win the 400 freestyle relay.
For the Patriot boys (2-2), James Keen and Josh Lykins won both individual events they competed in. Keen earned victories in the 100 freestyle (51.26) and the 100 backstroke (55.15), and Lykins remained unbeaten on the season in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Cody White also placed first for Jay County in the 500 freestyle.
Lykins and White also contributed in two winning relay teams, joining Matt Blackford and Jacob Nichols to win the 200 freestyle relay and Sok Vormohr and Keen to place first in the 400 freestyle relay.
Jay drops fourth straight
FRANKTON — The Jay County girls basketball team led in each of the first three quarters.
But when the final buzzer sounded, it was Frankton that had the lead.
Katie Key scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the final period as the Frankton Eagles erased a 17-point deficit to defeat the Patriots 40-36.
It was the first road loss for the Patriots (4-5).
Jay County led 32-15 after three periods, until Key and her teammates outscored the Patriots 25-2 in the final frame. Frankton (3-4) shot a perfect 8-of-8 from the field in the final eight minutes, including 5-of-5 from long distance. The Eagles had only made six shots total in the first 24 minutes.
Bre McIntire led the Patriots with 10 points, and Catherine Dunn added seven. Abbi Dunlavy chipped in five points and three assists.
Ava Kunkler grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
It’s been a season of streaks for both Jay County and Frankton.
The Patriots have lost four straight games after winning the previous four, and the Eagles won their third straight contest after going winless through their first four.

Fort falls to Blue Jays
DELPHOS, Ohio — The Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team led by eight points after the first quarter.
It would not lead again.
The Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays outscored the Indians 42-29 in the final three periods Thursday, defeating the Tribe 49-44 in Midwest Athletic Conference
play.
It was the second-straight conference loss for the Tribe, who fell to 4-2 (0-2 MAC) on the season.
Tori Lennartz tied with Lexie Hays of St. John’s for the game-high of 14 points. Sierra Pugh also scored in double figures for Fort Recovery, totaling 11 points.
Kendra Siefring contributed eight points off the bench, and Kara Jutte and Cassidy Rammel each added four points.
In junior varsity action, Fort Recovery was limited to single-digit scoring in each quarter, falling to the Blue Jays 38-22. Whitney Will led the Tribe with nine points, Jocelyn Kaiser chipped in five points and Devin Post added four.

EJMS tops Bluffton
The East Jay Middle School seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both earned wins over the Bluffton-Harrison Tigers on Thursday.
Eight different players scored for the East Jay seventh graders in their 37-16 win, and the eighth grade Chiefs won 27-13.
Kendra Muhlenkamp scored a team-high 10 points for the seventh graders, who held the Tigers to two points in the third quarter and one in the fourth.
Gwen Omstead added seven points, and Maggie Pryor tallied six points for the Chiefs.
Kailee Denney and Hanna Dillon both chipped in four points, and Klarissa Hemmelgarn, Hannah Philips and Sam Twigg each tallied two points.
The eighth grade Chiefs held Bluffton scoreless in the first quarter and limited the Tigers to three points in the third quarter and four points in the fourth.
Taylor Muhlenkamp led East Jay with eight points, and Betsy Muhlenkamp added seven. Katie Beougher tallied six points.

Schlechty leads EJ
BLUFFTON — Michael Schlechty scored 18 points as the East Jay seventh grade boys basketball team topped Bluffton-Harrison 35-22.
East Jay’s eighth grade cagers fell 54-36.
Matthew Franks and Ryan Schlechty scored seven and six points respectively for the East Jay seventh graders. Korbin Auker and Caleb Webster each added two points for the Chiefs, who are back over .500 with a 3-2 record.
Grant Keihn led the eighth graders with eight points, and Zarron Lee added seven. Collin Haines and Andrew Fields both chipped in six points for the Chiefs, who fell to 0-5 on the season.

FRMS cagers win
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery eighth grade boys basketball team improved to 3-1 on the season with a 37-28 win Thursday over the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays.
The Tribe seventh graders fell to 1-3, losing to the Blue Jays 29-26.
Ryan Braun paved the way for the eighth graders, scoring a team high 10 points.
Cade Wendel added nine points for the Indians, who also got seven points from Evan Post.
Payton Jutte scored 11 points for the Fort Recovery seventh graders.[[In-content Ad]]
