Patriot tankers close with pair of wins (02/09/06)

NEW CASTLE — Jay County’s boys swim team capped a late-season surge Wednesday night with a pair of victories.
The Patriots defeated the Muncie Southside Rebels 64-38 and the host New Castle Trojans 60.5-41.5. After a slow start they won four of their final five dual meets to finish with a 6-8 record.
Tom McCord paced Jay County as he won both of his individual events and was in on two of the team’s three relay victories. He finished first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1-minute, 2.19 seconds, and took just slightly longer in winning the 100 backstroke in 1:02.76.
Josh Hawn finished first in the 50 freestyle in 25.81 seconds, and Scott Walker captured the 200 freestyle victory in 2:05.28.
The Patriots will have a week off before competing in the preliminary round of the Homestead sectional Thursday, Feb. 16.
Shreve leads Jay
ANDERSON — Dexter Shreve had a mammoth game as the Jay County freshman boys basketball team capped its season with a 40-37 victory over the Anderson Indians.
Shreve racked up 27 points for the Patriots, who led by four points at halftime and after three quarters before holding on for the win. Phil Powell added nine points as Jay County finished 14-4.
Chiefs clobber HC
The East Jay sixth grade girls basketball team’s defense stood strong Wednesday, stifling Hartford City in a 49-5 victory.
Danielle Wellman and Kassi Hemmelgarn each reached double figures in the victory, finishing with 15 and 10 points respectively. Wellman had seven rebounds, and Hemmelgarn added five assists as the Chiefs improved to 8-1.
LeAnn Horn notched eight points and seven steals, Mariah Hornaday had nine rebounds and Tiff Huelskamp grabbed six boards.
Jessica Muhlenkamp led the B team’s 23-8 victory with five points.
Boomer champs
Jay County’s fifth grade AAU boys basketball team had a perfect day Saturday to win the Boomer Tournament at the Jay Community Center.
Jay County defeated Selma 33-19, East Central Black 32-8 and Rushville 43-32 in pool play.
It topped East Central Red 28-16 in the semifinal round, then beat Wayne County 53-40 for the title.[[In-content Ad]]
