Perhaps the Patriots can use Tuesday as a new beginning.
The Jay County girls tennis team earned its first victory of the year, defeating the visiting Frankton Eagles 4-1. The squad’s next match is Thursday at Muncie Southside, which also won its first match Tuesday by a 4-1 score over Randolph Southern.
Carissa Wilkins and Megan Adams led the attack for Jay County (1-6), each falling just short of a shut-out. Wilkins topped Taylor Rhoades 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Adams won her No. 3 singles match by the same 6-1, 6-0 score over Tiffany Marling.
The No. 2 doubles pair of Tiffani Bickel and Cindy Muhlenkamp also made quick work of Lille Knotts and Carissa Ward. They rolled to victory by a 6-2, 6-1 count.
The Patriots’ other win came at No. 1 doubles from Jessica Muhlenkamp and Megan Knittle. The duo dropped a long tie-breaker to Rache Hull and Anna Neese in the second set, but bounced back in the third for a 6-4, 6-7 (11-13), 6-4 triumph.
No. 1 singles player Angie Stults dropped her match 6-0, 6-2 to Tenley Rhoades.
