Patriot wrestlers defeat Southside

MUNCIE — Domination in the middle weight classes led the Patriots to victory Thursday.
Jay County High School’s wrestling team swept the 135- through 171-pound matches on the way to a 42-36 over the Muncie Southside Rebels.
With JCHS trailing 12-6 early, Jesse Finnerty kicked off the run with a pin of Thomas Whichard at 135 pounds. Kyle Davidson (140) followed with a pin in just 32 seconds, the fastest of the night, to give the Patriots the lead for good.
Drake Meska (145) followed with a 10-4 decision, Nick Leonhard (152) won by pin in six minutes, Zach Metcalf (160) earned a 13-12 decision and Eric Beougher (171) finished the run with a pin in 37 seconds. The Patriots (3-5) led 36-12 after Beougher’s pin, and later added six more points when Eric Hemmelgarn (215) scored a pin in 3 minutes, 31 seconds.

Hawks halt girls hoops
FORT WAYNE — A halftime lead disappeared Thursday as the girls basketball team got outscored 34-21 in the second half of a 52-40 loss to the host Harding Hawks.
Erica Cammack and Aaliyah Gaines each hit four 3-pointers and scored 17 and 16 points respectively to lead Harding, which trailed the Patriots 19-18 at the intermission. Gaines scored 10 of her points in the fourth quarter, and Tyreca Jackson added 10 of her 15 in the final period.
Mariah Hornaday finished with 13 points to lead Jay County (4-3), which had won three in a row. Mariah Murphy added 12 points, and Kassi Hemmelgarn scored nine.
Freshman boys fall
The freshman boys basketball team lost 36-21 Thursday to the visiting Bellmont Braves.
Zach Fullenkamp led the Patriots with eight points. Brennen Krieg and Zane Shreve added five points apiece.

Eagle boys lose
SELMA — The West Jay Middle School eighth grade boys basketball team lost 45-19 Thursday to Selma, and the seventh graders lost 41-33.
Nate Brackman did most of the scoring with 13 points for the eighth graders.
Kyler Carvel and Dan Meranda were the only other Eagles to score, finishing with three points each.
Carvel totaled 13 points in the seventh grade games as WJMS fell to 3-2. Meranda scored nine points.

EJ drops pair
East Jay’s eighth grade boys basketball team fell 33-25 Thursday to visiting Muncie Northside, and the seventh grade squad lost 46-26.
Nick Clemens had nine points as the eighth graders fell to 1-2. Justin Dirksen added eight points.
Bryce Hensley scored 10 points for the seventh grade team (0-3). Adam Dirksen and Bowen Runyon followed with five points apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
