It looked like Jay County High School would be home to a couple of barn-burners Friday night.
After a double-overtime junior varsity game the Winchester Golden Falcons led by two at halftime of the varsity contest. But the host Patriots went on a pair of double-digit runs after the intermission to surge to a 57-38 victory.
Jay County (9-2) trailed by as many as six points in the first half, and fell behind by five when Brock Ward opened the second-half scoring with a 3-pointer.
It was all Patriots after that as they went on a 12-0 run to claim the lead for good. They added a 13-0 run over a stretch of just 1:36 early in the fourth quarter and capped the game with eight consecutive points.
“We got our act together and decided to play our game,” said Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman after he and the Patriots outscored Winchester 36-13 in the second half. “That (first half) was not how we play at all. And we just came out and instinct took over probably.”
Bruggeman was one of four players in double figures as he scored 11 points. Randy Evans also played a huge role in the second half as he hit three of his four 3-pointers and scored 11 of his game-high 16 points after the break.
“When the shots started falling, we just got in a groove,” said Evans, who finished 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. “In the first half we couldn’t get in a groove at all. I think in the second half we just turned it up on offense and defense.”
“That’s a big part of our game,” added Jay County coach Craig Teagle, who went much of the game without the services of Corey Comer because of foul trouble. “We’ve got to shoot the outside shot well. What we have to do is hit some outside shots, open up the post and then let those guys work one-on-one a little bit.”
Teagle also credited improved defense with the turn-around.
After Winchester (7-5) shot an outstanding 7-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, in the first half, it was limited to just 5-of-14 in the second. The Patriots also forced 13 second-half turnovers, giving the Golden Falcons 22 for the game.
Brody Tarter, who keyed an 8-0 second-quarter run for Winchester and had 11 points at the half, was limited to just one point after the break.
“I think we got our pressure extended a little better,” said Teagle. “I don’t know why we weren’t getting to it in the first half like we needed to. Every time we did get into it we bothered them.
“The Tarter kid hurt us in the first half so we put John Retter on him in the second half. John just doesn’t like to be scored on. He just did a great job, keeping him in front and contesting everything. John is one of those kids we’re fortunate to have because he can guard inside and out.”
Retter scored 12 points as he and Tyler Rigby (13 points, 6-of-6 free throws) joined Evans and Bruggeman in double digits. Bruggeman grabbed a team-high six rebounds to lead Jay County to a 26-19 advantage on the glass, and also had two assists.
The Patriots are now more than halfway to their goal of an undefeated season at home as they now stand 6-0. They will be at home again Friday when they host Anderson Highland.
Tarter finished with a team-high 12 points. He is one of just two seniors on a very young Falcon team, which had two sophomores and a freshman in the starting lineup.
Freshman Tyler Koch scored 11 points and had three assists, and sophomore Brock Ward had 10 points. Ward shot 3-of-4 from 3-point range.
Senior Dave Beshears grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
“We defended awfully well in the second half, but you’ve got to give Winchester a lot of credit,” said Teagle. “They dictated tempo in the first half and ended up with a lead ...
“They just played extremely well in the first half. ... They’re playing some young guys. They’re going to be an awfully good basketball team in the future.”

Jay County came out on the short end of a double-overtime thriller, falling 54-52 to the Golden Falcons.
Winchester hit a 3-pointer early in the second 3-minute overtime and held the lead until Aaron Daniels came through with a 3-point play with 37 seconds left. But after the Patriots failed to convert off a steal, Austin Davis buried a 3-pointer to reclaim the advantage with about five seconds to go.
Despite getting a couple extra seconds to work with — the clocked stopped when coach Chuck Phillips tried to call time out while play continued as no official saw his request — Jay County was unable to get off a final attempt.
Daniels and Lance Franklin paced Jay County (7-4) with 11 points apiece. Rhett Retter finished with seven.
Levi Cross scored 15 for the Golden Falcons, and Davis finished with 13. Clarke Kauffman also reached double figures with 11 points.[[In-content Ad]]
