Patriots beats Winchester

Jay County roundup

A four-run lead was just enough for the Jay County High School baseball team Thursday as it held on for a 4-3 victory over the visiting Winchester Golden Falcons.
Ryan Miskinis led the Patriots (2-0) with a pair of doubles, two runs and an RBI as they scored once in the first inning, once in the third and twice in the fourth to build their lead. Devin Conatser added two hits and two RBIs.
Winchester (0-2) picked up a run in the fifth inning and scored twice in the seventh before their rally fizzled.
Andy Haffner earned the victory, giving up one run on three hits and five walks in four innings. He struck out five batters.
Ty Huntsman gave up two runs, but struck out seven batters in three innings for the save.

Girls tennis falls
DECATUR — The Patriots’ No. 1 doubles duo picked up the only victory Thursday in a 4-1 season- to the host Bellmont Squaws.
Ashley Caupp and Emily Huntsman scored the lone point for Jay County as they controlled the third set for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Madelina Albert and Abby Stimpson at No. 1 doubles.
In No. 1 singles action, Jessica Ooten fell 6-3, 6-0 to Allison Gutierrez, and at the No. 2 spot Rachel Ray lost 6-2, 6-1 to Maddi Werling. Alicia Degler and Kyla McKibben dropped the No. 2 doubles match 6-2, 6-0 to Andre Fruchte and Shelby Kiess, and Cindy Hein lost 6-0, 6-1 to Alysha Helmrich at No. 3 singles.

Delta downs softball
Jay County matched visiting Delta in the second inning, but couldn’t keep with the Eagles offense the rest of the way in a 17-2, five-inning defeat.
After both teams scored two runs in the second inning, Delta broke the game open with nine in the third. It added two in the fourth and four in the fifth for the final margin.
Nikka Chaney took the loss, allowing 17 runs — nine earned — on 12 hits and four walks.
Katlin Petro singled and scored a run for the Patriots (0-2), and Chaney added the other run.
Ashley Motter added a pinch-hit double, and Taylor Franklin had a single.

JV baseball wins
SHENANDOAH — Jason Houston turned in a mammoth effort to lead Jay County to a 13-11 victory over the Shenandoah Raiders.
Houston smacked four of the Patriots’ five hits as they picked up their first win. He also scored four times and drove in four runs.
Welsey Hibbard hit a solo home run and scored twice, Blake Boughman had a single, two runs and an RBI, and Jon Lowe doubled and scored a run.
Houston earned the victory in three innings on the mound. Taylor Fugiett and Wesley Hibbard each tossed two innings of relief.[[In-content Ad]]
